Weekend Adventure

We finally got a calm weekend so we made the most of it. Left out of Rudee Inlet Saturday morning. The plan was to spend the night shark fishing. We headed south, all the way to The Point. We put out a trolling spread and within minutes, tuna were hitting everything. Three lines came tight which were plenty as there were only three of us. We managed to boat all of them, yellowfin tuna in the 35-pound class. I made the comment that 2 more times like that, we would have our limit and what were we going to do until dark? Of course, that was a stupid thing to say. We did not have another tuna bite the rest of the afternoon.

We set up for our evening drift inside of The Point and drifted east. We had stuff for swordfish, tuna chunking, and of course shark stuff. We started out putting out a couple of swordfish baits. We had the lines taken from our hands as were feeding them out. Sharks were already there so we started shark fishing. We put out some chum and started to catch sharks as fast as we could re-rig and get a bait in the water. I’m not good at identifying sharks. These were just sharks, dusky, bull or other sharks. We did not catch any of the easy to identify sharks. I expected a lot of blue sharks based on long-line reports in the area but we did not see any. These sharks ranged from 4 to 8 feet long. Wes Blow caught the largest, about 200 pounds. Bob Manus had a big fish on but it was on one of the swordfish rigs and after an impressive run, it bit through the monofilament leader.

This was Bob’s first fishing trip since back surgery. It probably was not a good first trip. I think he is going to need some more surgery. He sure was making some funny noises while fighting those sharks. We drifted on out past the 1000 fathom curve. The sharks stayed with us the entire night.

Sunday morning, we started trolling again. There was a lot of life around but we only caught false albacore. We picked up early for the run back to Rudee. I was a little concerned about fuel. We had run to The Point before and we have done plenty of overnight trips but we had never run to The Point for an overnighter. It turned out we had plenty of fuel.

Monday morning, I fished the Triangle Wrecks. Everyone else was at work except the Poquoson School kids were out of school. I picked up 14-year-old Hunter Southall on the way to Virginia Beach. We caught some nice flounder which went in the cooler. We also caught some nice sea bass which we had to let go. Big bluefish are out there as some of the sea bass were bit in half. Time to go fishing for bluefish. The flounder we caught were 18 to 26 inches long with most of them in the 22-24 inch range.

Be prepared

Left Teachs in Hatteras for the 400 line with visions of yellow fin at 6.30 Sunday AM. Lots of buzz at the marina with great weather and high expectations in the forecast. I ran a solid 35 knots in calm seas until i noticed a flotilla of charter boats working lots of bird activity at the 300 line so we head for them and about a mile from our destination my port engine goes pop pop pow and shuts down. She wont turnover and the prop wont turn free. I take 15 minutes to do some calculations and make the call that with a 2 to 3 knot current going back to Hatteras for 46 miles i am better off going 57 miles to Wanchese. So off we go to Wanchese at 9 mph and clear OI in big swells with opposing screaming tide going out making a 2 mph twisted headway at 5.15pm
LOTS OF PUCKER FACTOR. Pulled in to Wanchese at 6.20 pm after the slowest trip i hope i ever have from the gulf stream. Thank god for the following
My fraternity of fishing friends had 4 different boats pull up and ask are we ok. Thanks G&H and Fat beard for the call

Sat phones I was able to call two other boats fishing with me that we were going to go to Wanchese they were jigging the rocks off Hatteras and i couldn't get them on the radio.

GPS allowed me to calculate distance and timing and make the call to go to OI inlet.

Last but not least my other motor it got me home and safe.

Steve called me from Joe"s marine repair about an hour ago in Wanchese he is my Yamaha dealer to let me know my warranty expired 47 days ago. GO FIGURE

OI NOV 8

We made the trip south of the point along with the fleet. Got the spread out and shortly after get hit on the long rigger, line goes slack and pull back in a bite off. I guess that set the tone for us for the day. Fished hard in grass most of day and was only able to get a gaffer and a small black fin for meat off a forming weed line. We must have had 30+ Nerf football size Blackfins for the day all on cedar plugs off the back of the boat. Still a nice day on the water.

OI - 08 Nov 2009

What a beautiful day on the water with a great crew, Fatbeard, His friend Kenny, My neighbor Eric, Mike and the Golden Horshoe Gusman... We were the second boat out of the inlet at 0500 and headed to the 400 line. Great ride out until we got about eight miles out and ran into some 4' nasty slop. We made it to our mark and get a seven rod spread out 15 minuites later 6 out seven rods get hammered, six 50 wides screaming is an awesome sound to hear first thing in morning. I thinking damn this is going to a good day... All of them turned out to "Fat Alberts" and that set the tone for us for the day, we must have pulled in 40+ Fat Alberts for the day... As Gus was reeling in the shotgun rod to change baits since it had been hit by Fat Alberts, it gets hammered on the retrieve, passed the rod to Eric and he boats the only Blackfin. His first tuna and the only meat fish for the day. We lost a nice wahoo that clipped the leader when we where leadering him. Rode back in with a flat sea and got to sea the the most beautiful sunset as we came back though the inlet.

Our gears are shifting to rockfish and the chance to get into a Bluefin in sometime in December out of Morehead City.

Launched at Teaches at sunup. Hit the Empire Gem...nothing. Trolled 100fa at the 230 line...no bites. Bottom fished the 230 rocks...nothing. Caught some bonita for bait then ran S. 17mi to the Rockpile...bottom fish were snapping. Loaded up on triggers. Also a few nice seabass and some throwback gag groupers. Wx and sea conditions were absolutely beautiful. Ran back in at 29 kts. 80 deg water and T-shirt fishing in Nov. Gotta love Hatteras! John (Korona, 22 Grady)
