I am heading to the OBX this weekend and am planning on heading out on Sunday for my first trip in my boat. Any reccomendations on choosing between HI and OI? I am just hoping to find some mahi, possible tuna or wahoo. I will be trolling a 6 rod spread with two planers. I have a 20' foot Hydra-Sports. It is pretty heavy with a deep V and about 300 mile range.
Is there anything I need to know about getting through the inlet at OI? The forecast is 5-10 with 2-3.
Also, I want to have a back up plan of King macks and tilefish dropping. Can anybody give me a GPS number or two for Tilefish out of OI or HI?
I read all of the reports of the charters and on this board, but any advice any wants to give me would be much appreciated.
Thanks and enjoy the weekend,
Lake

Lake We will be out of Hi on sun . I think the forecast will be bigger in the AM and hopefully laying down in the pm. OI /Hi are notrious for being big . Be careful and hopefully your first trip will be safe and sucessful.

If the weather forecast remains the same, looks like we will be heading out of OI going to the tuna hole and see if we can find some meat fish.
Kings were biting hard earlier this week near the navy tower east of OI, if you launch early, follow the fleet as they have been heading out for the king bite all week long.
Be careful in and out of the inlet! It can be rough when the tides rolls.....

It looks like both places are pretty much catching the same but HI might have a few more billfish. Hatteras is almost half the run as OI but longer trailer ride. It's an East wind both places. In HI they say you can't catch a crab with an east wind. It always seems to be a little slower.

I would be very careful with both inets. I just looked at the diamond shoals and its 8 fters out there. It will be mostly swell with the wind predicted but swells can make the inlets really big. And a 20fter isn't much boat for offshore fishing. Watch it close and be careful. Neither inlet is on fire so doesn't matter. Me personally, I would go to hatteras cause the rockpile is 20 miles out and they have been getting mahi wahoo and sails. Mostly Kings out of OI.
