'99 Volvo 5.7L TBI electrical problems?

We have an '84 Albemarle with a '99 volvo penta 5.7L with throttle body injection. Recently, it has started to act up. Sometimes, it will run great, while other times it will loose power and miss terribly. Has anyone else had this problem. Volvo seem to think it is the ECM or the Distributer. The dilema is the price of these parts. I don't want to spend $1200 for an ECM only to find out it's not the problem. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. I'm missing out on another Striper season and starting to go through withdrawl symptoms

my father in law has a '98 regal with the same engine but carbureted, and the same problem. he seems to think its something with the wiring in the controls, but im not quite sure about that. it could be the ignition coil starting to break down, which is what im leaning more towrads, his will run great and then kinda bog down and if you bump the throttle up it clears up, does this sound like what you are experiencing? you should also be able to replace that distributor with any chevy HEI distributor, but im now certain on that, due to the EFI. those dizzys can be had for around $50 on ebay, if you have any more questions about that engine you can drop me a PM or email at derek.malpass@gmail.com

Gee, could be anything. Plugs, plug wires, filters, cap, rotor. When you say distributer, did you already replace the cap and rotor?
My boat fouled up last year, and it was the freaking coil wire. Which btw was the last thing I changed, after rebuilding the carb, replacing the plugs, filters and coil.
The first thing that comes to my head is fuel filter, have you changed it?
What have you tried?

The plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and fuel filter have all been changed since the problem started. Sometimes it starts up and is running great, when it acts up it seems to choke itself out and bog down when throttle is applied. If it acts up while we are running, it will bog, backfire and drop off plane and then we are left at idle speed. Sometimes it will clear itself up and sometimes it makes for a long trip back to port.

<<UPDATE>>
Replaced coil and ECM, still no change. The diagnostic computer shows all sensors returning bad signal when it acts up. Have also changed low presssure fuel pump. The high pressure pump tested in propper range. We're really started to get frustrated! We have no idea what to try next....
