Cool Landing

Welcome back skyhunter. Kind of reminds me of Butte, Montana, except the runway in Butte is too small to operate aircraft this large. 50 passenger regional jets are about all they get in there. You fly down a cut between two mountains, all you can see is trees out of both sides of the plane and it's bumpy as hell, break into a little soupbowl of a valley, bank hard left and put it down quick. I used to love flying into that airport with a rookie on the team. By the time we were on the ground he was convinced we weren't going to make it. Sometimes, I'm just a bad, bad person....LOL!

Thank you Marlin. Now i'm 100% sure it's Tegucigalpa, it's all over youtube. Hey Billy aircrafts have very low air pressure in the tires, i'm not sure if that has anything to do with it being able to land like that. If you saw some the tires on our helos and even our C-130's you would probably think that they are flat.

The landing gear is designed to handle that to a certain extent. I've seen film of a BUFF landing with the nose not even remotely pointed in the direction of travel. That big puff of tire smoke tells me this one was close to the limit. I think they have about 10 degrees to either side of dead center before they break something or spin the thing into the ground. Tony would know. He was born at USAir. Fill us in amigo!

I know I am 'technologically challenged' but I can usually manage clicking on a video- it doesn't look like things are working in geek land this am but from the comments, I would love to see it!
I know you believe you understand what you think I said but I am not sure
that what you heard is what I meant!

WOW! The bird strike was interesting but man, what the hell was the other guy thinking? Much better to abort and either go around or divert that to smash it up on the runway. It looked like his wingtip might have touched the tarmac. I'll pass on the Kamikazi Airlines flight, that you very much!

That looks like Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Just spent six months down there.
What's the runway length there?

What's the runway length there?
The airport's single runway is 1,863 m (6,112 feet) in length and is at an altitude of 1,004 m (3,294 feet). Boeing 757s are the largest aircraft that can land at Toncontín, as it is one of the shortest international runways in the world. This airport is frequently criticized for being one of the most dangerous in the world (due to its location next to a sierra, its short runway, and difficult approach, which requires large commercial jets to execute a tight hairpin leftward u-turn at very low altititude to land on a very short runway--American Airlines pilots, for example, receive additional, specific training for the Toncontin approach).

Five people were killed and many others injured after Flight 390 of TACA airlines overran the runway at the Toncontín International Airport in Tegucigalpa. The Airbus 320 held dozens of people on board including both passengers and crew, although various accounts are inconsistently reporting occupant numbers. Flight 390 began in San Salvador, El Salvador and just departed its intermediate stop at Tegucigalpa before it was to continue towards Miami, United States.
The plane fell to the city streets while approaching the runway at approximately 1600 UTC (10 am local time). The accident occurred in the midst of bad weather from tropical storm "Alma". Among the casualties confirmed are the president of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, Harry Brautigam.
