My wifes Dad rented one of the cabins at Kiptopeke state park for the week and invited us up for a couple of days....the whole family went, so I couldn't fish as much as I would have liked, but got a good bit of time in. I also got to run my new to me 1991, 18' wellcraft center console and it is AWESOME!!

Fished Sunday afternoon for 4 hours, Monday morning for 2 hours, Monday evening for 4 hours, and Tuesday Morning for 3 hours.

Location/s: Mainland side of Fishermans island bridge and down channel towards new wildlife ramp.

Results:
Sunday- 2 Keepers and 20 or so throwbacks Keepers 19 1/2 and 21
Monday- 6 Keepers and 40 or so throwbacks, had a couple of nice fish a 22 and 23
Tuesday- 4 Keepers and about 12 throwbacks, couple of 19's and a 20 and 21

Rig: 2- 3 way swivels separated by about 14" and 2 trailers off those about 12-16" with a 6, 8, 12 oz sinker (whatever holds in the current)

Method: Backtrolling into current

Depth: anywhere there was a drop-off from 6' to 20' with most fish being picked up in 10-13' of water.

So we didn't burn em up, but did ok....man there is a lot of nice fish in this year, it breaks my heart to throw back a 18 and 15/16" fish.... If the size limit was 18" we could have easily gotten our limit each day!

Had a great time, weather cooperated, and we caught some fish.....a good time was had by all!

Nice report. I used to flounder fish over there all the time when I was younger but haven't done it in a while. Could you explain your rig more? I can't visualize it.

Great Job- I'l be over at the state park for the week of the 4th- we have picked up lots of fish in that area. Fishing a small boat instead of going offshore is different but we really enjoy it and it is the only way we can afford to spend much time on the water. Way to go!

Great report. Does anyone have a contact or a # of who to contact about camping or a cabin over there. I would love to fish that area and it would be nice just to get away for a day or two.

Nice report. I used to flounder fish over there all the time when I was younger but haven't done it in a while. Could you explain your rig more? I can't visualize it.

Best way I can describe it is from bottom to top.....

bottom of rig has 6-12 oz sinker, or whatever holds the bottom in the current that you have....

6" up from that you have a 3 way swivel and on the middle eye tie a 14-18" or so length of line to a flounder rig and hook

on the top eye of the bottom 3 way tie a 12-14" line to another 3 way and on the middle eye of the 2nd 3 way tie a 14-18" length of line to a flounder rig and hook.

Tie the line from your rod to the top of the 2nd 3 way swivel.

Basically you want enough weight to hold bottom, a rig parallel to the bottom 6" off the bottom and another rig 18" or so off the bottom, kind of like a big croaker rig with long arms.

P.S. it is a bit of a pain to get in the water but you would be supprised how many you catch on the top rig....remember, a flounder has eyes on top of his head... those that fish right on the bottom are missing a lot of fish cause a flounder cannot see straight on the bottom.

This rig was shown to me by an old man that fished right next to me last year and he caught 10 fish to my one..... made a believer out of me, and has increased my success rate tremendously....

Here is a picture....Gus and Sammy wanted to be my "Vanna's" and Gus wanted me to take it in front of his Rockfish. HA!

-http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/kip.shtml 800-933-PARK for reservations

Cabins (more like large houses) and RV rentals (trailers that are fully equipped and set up) are available only by the week through the summer but if they are not rented (this happens fairly often) may be rented for periods as short as 2 days. You have to call and check. If you make reservations and cannot go or the weather forecast is bad, you need to ask to change your reservation to anytime within the next year. There is no charge for this but if you ask for a refund there will be a penalty and it can be stiff. The campground is nice- mostly full hookups w'cable- has a good tenting area as well. They also have 'yurts' which are a kind of hut (with ac, I think) and a place to sleep. I have friends that rent the rv's there sometimes while I am down and they are well equipped. Queen master, dinette to a bed and 2 bunks, full kitchen and bath. The ramp facilities are good and free for campers, however they will charge you 3 bucks to park at the ramp and it can be a hike if you choose to park at your campsite. the ramp puts you right into the breakwater behind the concrete ships so you can fish there in almost anything at any time but it can still get rough. The federal ramp at the widlife refuge offers sheltered water at anytime behind fishermans island but is closed 1/2 hour after sunset to the same before sunrise. The cost there is 10 bucks. There is also a free public ramp at Oyster. Kiptopeke also has a fishing pier (at additional cost) which is lighted and can offer lots of opportunity, especially at night though many neglect going then. Try some small jigs or trout rigs for trout and during season the rocks can get thick in there as well. the 'shore' side doesn't offer the amenities of VB but the fishing is better and way less crowded (except on those rare slick days when everyone from the mainland side make the run across the bay). All sites have plenty of room for your boat so you don't have to park it in an overflow lot. For the rentals, you need your own linens. Most of this is available at the park website, reservations are through Reserve America. Hope this helps! Oh, camping season there is march through the 1st monday in december. The ramp facilities are open year round.
