Gonna try the cobia out this Saturday and was wondering if a few of you could help me out. I understand that eels and spot are choice bait but how many of each do you try to have with you on any outing? 12, 20, 40, etc...??? If not spot, are you having any luck with croakers? Thanks in advance

Hello Tommy,
Just about any live/dead bait will work. I like fatbacks, sm. blues, spot, and croakers in that order. I have even caught some good size cobia on cut up spanish macks down at Hatteras. Good luck. Sam |

Yes, to both questions. Sharks and rays will bother you all day, but you need bait in the water. Just take another smaller rod with you with some squid and bottom rig. You should be able to catch you as much bait as you will need. Hope this helps, good luck. Also keep a bucktail on a rod, so if one comes swimming by you can make a cast.

two weeks ago I spent a 1/2 an afternoon/evening at fishermans island between the bridge and the end of the island in the 15-20ft water using cut spots and croakers and only cought sharks and skates... on the other rod i had crabs and caught nada... It was disappointing! I was wanting a Cobia or Drum!

I brought 40 croakers last time and had plenty left over. Of course, I didn't catch anything either. I think the bluefish will tear up your baits more than anything else. Catch some of them and put them on a hook. A bluefish won't eat a bluefish. Cut bait will bring out the critters.

Everyone has pretty much covered everything!! You want to make sure that your bait is FRESH, FRESH, FRESH!! The fresher the better....
I am heading this Friday and my plan is to get a handful of croakers the day before, then going to have about 7 eels onboard with me....And that Friday morning we are heading out early and stopping at Thimble Shoals Light to throw out some clark spoons and pick up some fresh bluefish! Once we anchor at our spot then we give them the buffet! Every cobia trip we always experience big rays, sharks, and bluefish! Once there is chum, they all seem to gather around it. Be patient and wait it out for that big monster cobia. If you seem to be catching only crabs then its time to pull up anchor and move somewhere else. Other than that just have a good ole time and be patient!
