Just bought my new Yamaha F225 to repower my boat, and as they are installing, the guy calls me to tell me the prop was not included in the cost. Whatever. Anyway, I as what prop they'll put on, and he mentions all they have is an aluminum prop ... what they usually put on new Yamahas. He says "shouldn't be any issue, unless you take the boat offshore alot or something." Well ... yes ... I DO GO OFFSHORE. I guess the concern is with running aluminum props for any duration at full throttle. I hardly ever go full throttle anyway, always trying to find optimal cruising speed when headed out to the fishing grounds.

Is there any reason I should be concerned with putting on an aluminum prop?

I would not be too concerned with running an aluminum prop wide open; bass boats do it all the time. The major downfall with aluminum is that it does flex, thus limiting its performance. I would not worry too much about the dealer installing it- It will make a good emergency spare one day after you decide what the proper pitched stainless prop you need for your aplication. I know in the past Murphy's Prop Shop ( good folks!) has loaned me a few props to try so that I could get the "right one" I desired. I will tell you when it comes time for a prop repair aluminum is about half the cost....

I ran offshore for years in Florida with alluminum props, the only problem is that it affects performance and fuel efficency but not much. You'll go a couple of MPH slower at the top end and burn a few more gallons per tank, mabey 2-5 MPH at wide open and .5 gallon per hour fuel at wide open. Plus it makes a great spare for when you get a new prop.
