I'm currently looking at buying a couple of Tyrnos 16's or 20's and have a few questions regarding line and leaders. I don't want to deal with leadering line so I believe wind-ons are the only option but there are a few questions to go along with this. I've been considering using the power pro hollow braid (80#) which claims to have a diameter equivalent to 20# mono.

Has anyone on here tried to spool up with this rather than mono and instead of making wind-ons just threading mono directly into the hollow braid mainline say 4-5 feet then tieing to the swivel? My guess is and I'm not sure, this is why I'm here asking, that this would allow more line, higher breaking strength than say 20# mono bimini's, and also serve as a knotless wind-on system.

What are your thoughts on this. Let me again say that I am fairly new to rigging offshore gear and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tommy

Tommy! My question to you is what are you doing with the set up,If you are trolling which i believe is what your intentions are and this is my experience and i am no expert i wouldn't go thru with the trouble of hollow core braid and the splicing factor etc.etc after which you still have to have a swivel on the end. The last thing you want is twisted hollow core braid and it will twist without the swivel. If i was to be trolling with them reels you might want to look at MOMOI diamond line. It is 1/4 of the cost for your braid set up, it is highly under rated strength wise and it has excellent abrasion resistance. I use all Momoi diamond on my off shore trolling reels in special clear and it has performed beyond my expectations. My typical trolling reel has Momoi diamond line attached to a 230lb wind on spro or penn swivel to a 12 or 15 ft 100lb test smoke blue tuff line leader directly to my bally hoo or lure. Its cheap, strong and works for me. Good luck and catch em up. Conch

Thanks for the info Conch. I do plan on tying a swivel to eliminate twist but my lure leaders wouldn't be but 5 feet. I wasn't familiar with the Mamoi Diamond until now so I'll take a look at that as well. Any other thoughts on this from anyone else?????

Tommy, I second the Momoi diamond Line. It's very soft and easy to work with. And like Conch, I don't bother with the hollow wind ons, I just attach an SPRO wind on swivel to the end of the line and attach my leader to that, both with crimps. And I always try to make my leaders are long enough that with the fish at the side of the boat, the swivel plus a couple of wraps of leader are on the spool. The crimps and swivel should take the same tension as the running line, but no need to tempt fate at the point of maximum pressure. Just a thought. Tight lines and good luck!

One thing to consider if you want the benefit of a wind-on is to make the leader long...like 30-40ft. I say this because you will be able to get quite a few cranks of the heavier line on the reel while bringing the fish to the gaff. IF the fish makes a short 10-20ft burst, you should still have the wind-on swivel on the reel (vs. having it going in/out of the guides a bunch of times).

I use a Uni or a Jam knot to tie the 80 pound mainline to my spro and then crimp my leader (usually 130 fluor or 130 diamond) for my longer wind on leaders.

Good luck!

Thanks guys I'll talk all this info into consideration. It sounds like we have the same general ideas and I hope to put this info to use very soon. My thought were to use the 80# hollow braid where I would splice a 50' length of 80# mono into the braid ~3-4 feet, whip the connection with a series of wraps to eliminate fraying or use low heat shrink tubing. Then tie to swivel where the lure and leader would connect. I was thinking the 50' of mono would allow me to spool onto the reel for that moment at the boat should a fish decide to take off.

After hearing your thoughts on this I think I will change my thought process. Thanks for the info.

I am a hard braid person but have put all suffix high vise on my offshore trolling stuff makes it real easy to see on the outriggers. The mono also gives some strech one the fish take fast burst line out I use the 50lb main line with 130lb leader I plain to put windons on all my set makes it a lot easyer than hand lineing
Those of us that expect to catch fish usauly do

Good point about the High Vis line Jimbob! I put 30 lb. Trilene Big Game in High Vis Yellow on ALL 8 of my TLD-25 clones for just that reason. I just can't see the lines anymore. Tough for an old salt like me to admit, but it's true. And the Big Game is a LOT less expensive that the Momoi Diamond Line I normally use. Richmond, one final tip on the wind on leaders. Make sure your angler backs off on the drag when the fish gets to the side of the boat. You're going to have to instruct them before hand and remind them during the fight. The one major problem with the wind ons is if the fish gets to the side of the boat and takes a final run with the drag tight, or the angler is trying to horse the fish in, the hook or lure can come flying out of his mouth, right back at the gaffman. And in close quarters with a big fish the possibility of serious injury is very real. Most long time mates have battle scars from hooks spit back at them at boatside, but a lost eye or a 10/0 j hook embedded in someone's cranium can put a real damper on an otherwise great day of fishing. Just a thought. Catch 'em up!
