Anchored up on middle ground late Wednesday afternoon. Chum bag and drip with 6 rods out with a mix of bunker, crab, live bait top and bottom.
First fish on after 5 minutes was a 3 foot black tip then the occasional return of half a live bait and a few Skate. After perhaps 90 minutes "bam" old Mitchell reel started singing like a canary, "man in the brown suit" we all hoped. This fish ran and pulled like a freight train "if this a Cobia it's a beast" I said but my main concern was getting spooled which my prayers were answered when I gained back some line briefly. We went back and forth for about 25 minutes before being shocked at seeing a 6 foot Tiger Shark stripes plain as day along side the boat then off it went again for another burst at freedom. Third time alongside we got the Shark off and it swam away for a well needed rest as I did only to fight another day.

We saw the stripes plain as day just missed with the camera shot. We were all stunned at catching one this size in the bay, it canceled our early evening cool down dip I can tell you that much! That's a tiger shark head for sure, I knew an old guy at the shipyard that saw one 10 or 15 years back while doing some work up by cape charles, he said it was about six foot too. I wonder what they're eating in the bay, I wouldn't think there would be anything big enough to keep them around but obviously there is something. I know one of their favorite food is sea turtles, I've seen a few of those from time to time so maybe that's it. Interesting. Good Idea on skipping the dip in the bay. . . those guys can be bad new -------------------- Calling fishing a hobby is like calling brain surgery a job. ~Paul Schullery

That sure looks like a tiger to me. They love rays too. I'll bet all those cownosed rays up in the bay are a feast for them. The All Tackle World Record was caught off a fishing pier not far from where I live, just over the border in South Carolina, and was caught using a live skate. Usually the water in Virginia is too cold for them. Interesting. A tiger yesterday and bull sharks in the pound nets last week. Might be a good summer to do your swimming in a pool. Tigers and bulls both aren't real choosy in what they bite or eat. Just a thought.

When the pound nets were emptied a week or so ago at the concrete ships (Kiptopeke) there were apparently at least a dozen Bull Sharks over 200 lbs. in the net Keep your distance!!! |
