Had a great run out Sunday morning to the Cigar area in a gentle swell and light winds. Our friendsTed and Margaret, previous owners of our Topaz were onboard for a little fishing. Says alot about the boat when you are still friends with the previous owners! We set up at the 115 line in 40 fathoms or so and were hit soon after by a bill that just streaked though and didn't come tight. A short time later another billfish hits and pulls drag on the 80 wide as Pat grabs the rod and straps in. A nice run and a few jumps shows a nice White hooked up, but she is only on until some pressure goes on and comes unbuttoned, pulled hook. We were surrounded by two tones and had a mother Right Whale and Calf playing around nearby, with one pass where they came up 20 feet off the starboard bow and crossed in front. Beautiful sight. The two tones returned and we had a solid knockdown as Don was letting out the left short. That is the YFT in the video, and it would be the only meat of the day, but a treat for Ted who hasn't fished in the back of a boat since our trip to Costa Rica a yaer and a half ago. Too busy running Gypsy Charters up Northern Neck. While the area looked fishy most of the time it was best around 30-45 fathoms. Temps were consistant 74 degrees. We had the third marlin encounter when a Blue popped up and straked from right to left in the spread and put its head down right by the right short but never bit. Great day with friends and lots of sea life around. The fish were stingy today though.
Tight lines.
