In the aftermath of the noreaster, we went fishing yesterday. Inlet Station Marina had some damage but looked like it road the storm out well. The Healthy Grin was still floating, so we were good to go. We ran out to the Triangle Wrecks. For some reason, we had the whole area and the fish all to ourselves. Left-over waves were rather impressive in the morning but they laid down as the day progressed and then the sun came out! It was nice to see the sun again. We caught some big flounder, sea bass, and bluefish. We had to let all of the sea bass go. The bluefish were caught on the troll, by jigging, and with flounder rigs on the bottom. The only bad news is that we caught several spiny dogfish. They are not too thick yet.
You said you hit some spiny dogfish but did you catch any smooth dogfish aswell? Im only asking because we really like catching smooth dogfish because their actualy alright eating. We cut them up into steaks and broil them like sword fish. We didnt have much luck with them this year and we were wondering where they all went? Both me and my dad remember when we use to hear people complain about catching nothing but smooth dogfish all day and we would just go to where they were fishing and have a blast! I know when we used to live in massachusetts we would always come across HUGE schools of spiny dogfish that would pretty much ruin your day because they would follow the boat to your next fishing spot. Unlike smooth dogfish, Spiny dogfish secrete urine from the glands they have just bellow the skin which makes them taste gross to pretty much any predator out there including us, which is also why there is so many of them at times. Has anyone had any luck or "problems" with smooth dogfish lately? Any help is greatly appreciated and Thanks ahead of time.
We caught only a handfull of dogfish all year, which was a big change, and they tended to be really small. Of course, I was planning on using some for flounder bait and was going to try one fried since I have been told that they are good to eat and that in England they use dogfish for fish-n-chips. I don't know what is up with them- they do offer some pullage but were aggravating if you are targeting flatties or anything else.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said but I am not sure that what you heard is what I meant!
No signs of bluefin. The week before, there was a thresher shark working on the bluefish. All of the dogsharks were spiney. The only smooth dogs we have caught this year have been while offshore bottom fishing.
