Tell me more. I've been chasing spades since they got here but I didn't know they could be caught there.

I've never seen or heard of spadefish at HRBT. Plenty these days at CBBT. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I know for sure you can get them at CBBT 4th island and CLT.

If they are at HRBT, I would assume they were not as thick as CBBT.

If anyone know different I would be interested to know also.

I tried looking for them last week at the 4th with no luck. Went up and down the pilons with not a spade in sight or on a line.

I caught 4 of them last Friday, Ocean side of fourth Island. Up next to the rocks bridge side, not tube side.
There were thousands of them swimming around, but they were moving. You would see them, then they would move on. They would move in nibble on your hook and then leave. They were more picky than weeks before.

The guy next to us, when we got there said he had nothing, we anchored up and caught 2 right away, he then left.

I did not see any finning around.

We chummed them into us with Clam chum.

Great info. Thanks a lot. I hope I can return the favor sometime. As soon as I can figure out how to cancel/change enough appointments I'll be on "Change for a Hundred" on my way to the 4th. If you see me out there say hello on 68.

We will be at it Thursday or Friday evening. Going to give it a try for a few before we Cobia or Drum fish.

One thing I noticed is that they seem to be away from the rocks somewhat. Like maybe 25-30 yards, we saw more fish while I was setting the anchor than we did while we were fishing, before we difted closer to the rocks.

I told my buddy we would move out further if we did not hook up soon, but we did hook up.

We only fished for 2 hours and we caught 4, lost 6, and had about 20 play with our baits.

I wanted to stay longer but buddy had dishes or something like that to do. rolleyes.gif

I think I'm going to try the same thing but probably Friday/Saturday. I'll be on the lookout for you though. What do you answer to on the radio? Either way, I'll be hoping to post a good success report. Thanks again for the info.

Please ignore my response to the original question that I posted on 8/7/05. I answered YES to spades at the HRBT. This is incorrect. I have never seen any at the HRBT. I thought that it said spades at the CBBT. I did not realize that I had done this until yesterday when my boss(also a member of this forum) asked me if I had been fishing at the HRBT for spades lately. dry.gif dry.gif dry.gif

Friday the 12th was Not very fruitful. The current was going one way and the wind was blowing hard the other. We got out there around 3pm.

We did not get a chance to anchor up on the ocean side of 4th island and spade fish, just caught blues around the rocks.

We then went to thimble shoal and chummed nothing but sharks until 10 pm then called it quits.

Went from the 2ND Island to the 3RD Island looking for Cobia along the bridge yesterday and to my suprise every middle pylon had a school of Spade fish. I didn't bring any clam so I didn't stop. Also saw 2 baby Cobia but by the time I got back to them they were gone.

You could see them just below the surface.

Saturday we saw a school of spades breaking the surface. Also saw alot of very small jellys in the water at the surface. They must have been feeding, it was a neat sight. Tried to cast clam in front of them but they were not interested.
