I use a float when sight fishing spades. I use one that will float with a one ounce at the end of the line. Adjust depth to fish that you see - usually 2-4 feet. It's been my experience that the large ones swim right below the small ones when circling a piling, but they are mixed when in more open water.

I keep the bait about 6ft down, If I see them shallower I bring the hook up to them.

Clam on a number 4 or 6 red circle hook. Make sure your rod has some spine, my favorite is a 7ft med-heavy shakespere intercoastal.

Make sure your drag is pretty loose, let them take line and do not try to reel them in until they quite running.

I'll second that. Don't try to jerk/set the hook - they'll do it for ya.

Small bobber ,Small piece of Split Shot about 12 to 14 inches above A number 1 0r 2 red bait hook. Hook the piece of clam thur the toe so You have some hanging down {they seem to like it better that way}. If water is really clear You may have to use a Flouracarbon leader { helps with the shy ones }When the fish Hits let the bobber go out of sight and give them about 10 yards of line then just close the bail, { make sure you are holding on tight at this time} The best way to find them is to ride around the pillons till you see them,most of the time if you see 2 or 3 there are alot more around. Set up up current and chum to them and you should be able to get in to them. My 14 year old Daughter caught several around 8lbs on Saturday. We probally had caught over 50 total. Good luck . Jim Baugh from "Jim Baugh Outdoors" will be our guest speaker this Tuesday, August 16th. He will be talking on "Tips on Spade Fishing and Flounder Fishing" plus he will talk about the "Get Hooked on Hampton Rockfish Tournament and Oyster Bash" to be held on November 19th.

Our meeting of the Peninsula Sport Fisherman's Assoc. will be held at the Plumber's Union Hall across from the YMCA on Warwick Blvd at 7 pm on this coming Tuesday. Door prize tickets and such for all - member or not.

Funny you mentioned "Spade Fishing". I just returned from my family cruise vacation and let me tell you the fishing trip sponsored by the ship was the highlight of my trip. We made a port visit to the Florida Keys and went fishing for yellow fin, grouper and whatever else would bite. After the chum was put in the water, hundreds of spade fish were on the scene and I mean an arms length from the boat. I even touch a few of their long fins that were out of the water. I asked the boat captain if he had any bait to tangle with the spades and he told me that no one cares for the spade fish in the keys because their nuisance fish. I could not believe he said that but I guess every area has it's own opinion. I felt like an animal in a cage, watching prey pass almost within striking distance. If I had known the spades were in such abundance, I would have taken a can of clams with me to get that spade pullage. I did however catch a few yellow fin but they weren't tuna. I can't remember the name but they were yellow fin something. I caught a big ole grouper and a barracuda that had teeth that were probably at least a half an inch long. So for the past week, three hours on the water was my highlight.
