Got a late start on Saturday and opted for an overnighter. We set up in the Washington right at dark and began drift chunking. Also, I put out a deep drop rod. When I pulled up the deep drop rig to check it, about a 10' sea monster followed it to the boat. Actually, I think it must have been an Oarfish. It was all dorsal fin and seemed to be following the glow stick. I yanked the rig out of the water and it disappeared into the deep. Right after that, we started hauling dolphin one after another. Every time we put the spotlight on the water, we saw dozens of 'em. I doubt any of the chunks made it past them. It went that way 'til 4am, when a big front came through. It was a full time effort to keep the boat headed into the wind with the spray and the rain and the darkness. It let up around sunrise, when we began a slow ride home. We had 1 line out with triple cedar plugs that got a tuna bite in about 40 fathoms, but the reel seized up and the line snapped. We put out a full spread and went back through the spot 3 or 4 times, but got no takers. Made it back at about 11:30am feeling a bit beat up and in need of sleep. Kept 9 dolphin up to 12lbs and threw back a bunch of bailers. The water was hot and blue and weedy from the canyon to inshore.
