I AM PREPARING TO TAKE MY 6 PACK CAPT LICENSE TEST AND HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE O.J.T. REQUIREMENTS:
ALTHOUGH I HAVE 5 YRS IN THE C.G. (BACK IN 1981-86)
DOES THAT STILL COUNT TOWARDS THE 365 HRS REQUIRED?
HOW CAN I FIND OR SIGN ON WITH SOMEONE TO REFRESH AND LEARN THE ROPES SO I CAN GAIN THE SEAMANSHIP KNOWLEDGE RELATED?
CAN MY PRIVATE HOURS ON THE BAY COUNT, IF THEY ARE LOGGED IN MY FISHING LOG?
ANY GUIDANCE WILL BE GREATLY APPRICIATED!

TCC has a 9 Day Class that covers the Test. You should take it The test is intense. The Set and Drift problems are hard but if you learn the steps required to complete the equations its not that big of a deal. The light patterns are so numerous that unless you are a genious you wont remember them from 5 years ago. You can document your days at sea as long as you werent on a Vessel classified as a Ship. Tidewater Maratime School is across from Macarther Mall.If you have owned a boat for over Two years you can document your own time the school will also help you get your paper work through the system.Good Luck!

For an OUPV you need 360 days, not hours, and yours are definitely no good anymore. I think they count for three years and ninety days must be in the past twelve months. I think. Personally, I wouldn't waste your time. Take the 100 ton masters license test and you'll get it when you have the days on appropriate tonnage. So if you past the test, then get your days on a ten ton vessel, you'll get your 25 ton certificate. Then, if you work 90 days on a 26 ton vessel, you can upgrade to a 50 ton. Then 90 days on 51 ton or more and you can get the 100 ton. Then 90 days in the ocean and you can upgrade to nearshore not just inland. With six pack you are stuck. No upgrading. If you are looking to charter, you can take up to six with a masters license on an uninspected vessel, if you want to take more someday, you'll need the masters license and need to have the coast guard come inspect your boat and determine how many you are equipped to carry. Six pack courtesy exams are recommended for six packers who are running charters. Good luck, check out sea school.

I recently completed the 100 gross ton class at TCC and just recieved my license. You need to get as much license at first because every time you upgrade to a higher one it costs $$$$$$$$$$$. If you get a 100 ton, You will need 360 days inland time and 360 near coastal, if you so desire a near coastal endorsement. I wish you luck in your endeavors. Dave

Attention Military
I just completed the course OPERATOR OF UNINSPECTED PASSENGER VESSELS-OUPV (Captain's License or Six-Pack) and Upgrade OUPV to Not More Than 100 Gross Tons at TCC Hampton Roads Maritime Training Center down town Norfolk. The Military Tuition Assistance paid for the entire course. $1200.00 that might buy a little gas this fall. After 21 years in the Navy I finish my first off base college course. You Guys and Gals should take advantage of this great program. If anyone has any questions pmail.
