I used to do a good deal of saltwater fly fishing in CT, but am moving to VA and need some direction, pointers, etc on good times and locations, especially in Eastern VA/MD...

Welcome to the board! I too have not picked up a fly rod, but put a post in the Fly section and you should get some great info.

I have been taking the fly rod everytime I go out, you never know when they are going to come to the surface. I had great success this year around the CBBT, Cape Henry area November through January. caught a couple 38", 30lbs. Using a 9', 9wt rod, 400 grain rio line, 20lb flouro leader(6ft). I was using my own flies, clousers-chart, chart/white. Had the most success with a white bottom, white dumbells (medium) and two tone blue top w/ yellow and blue crystal flash down the middle. I fished the middle bay, around Chesapeake Beach, using the same set up, I think it was around June, July, August, caught a mix of resident stripers and blues as they fed on Bay anchovies. I here alot of talk about people fishing around the choptank w/flies. The Sus. Flats are the place to be in March. The stripers should be heading back up the bay to spawn. Keep listening for reports. My favorite place is Boston Habbaa for fly fishing stripers, I make trip to that area a couple times a year (that doesn't help much here). I hope that helps some.

bigger fish need bigger flies - i tie 6in to 12 in clousers with yak hair and have had the best results with a tri color combo,,,smaller schoolies like a blue and white clouser in a size2/0 to 4/0 use 6/0 for the yak flies fiished deep and slow, almost like mini jigging or slower,,almost wave action is enough

Hey,
If you are looking for someone to learn the area with, drop me a line. I moved from the Groton area, and have not really gotten into it to big as of yet. I would love to get active with a long rod again. I have a decent bit of experience but haven't had many chances to get out yet.

Heading back home for a little visit and would love to take a day or two and bring my rod with me. I've been out west and learend to fly here so I have yet to dwindle in the VA fly fishing! Does anyone know of decent areas in VA Beach that I can enjoy a few hours? Tight Lines-Michelle
