I'm new to the area and looking for some pointers. We really enjoyed catching red snappers in the gulf off of oil riggs. Simple fishing for the amatuers and great on the grill. What is a similar sport fish. We have a smaller (boat 26') and don't want to head out too far, but are willing to go a few miles. Any pointers or help would be great.

The closest thing to a Gulf Rig we have is the Chesapeake Light Tower, you will be able to catch Spade fish and Amberjacks in a 6 to 8 weeks. The Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel is also similar but alot longer with a ripping current. You can catch just about everything there except for Offshore species.South of the boarder there is Tower A b and c they hold Mako Sharks,Permit,All kinds of Jacks,Cobia. They catch Snapper on some of the wrecks in North Carolina I am not sure how far north they will go.Snapper are fun to catch I have caught them down in MooreHead City a Few times.

What kind of boat do you have? If you have the right safety equipment and check the weather frequently, you shouldn't have any trouble taking a 26' offshore. A lot of guys on this board go out in boats smaller than that.

There is a cca fishing show this weekend at the pavillion which has seminars on just about all the fish caught in this area. Probably a good idea to get local info.

i was wondering if the greater amberjack was a good eating fish or if it has worms in it like some of the other amberjack
