Was wondering what the best tactic might be for fishing Puppy Drum at Lynhaven Inlet?
Honey Hole
2 oz. egg sinker above a barrel swivel. 18-24" 40 lb. leader to a 4/0 Octopus hook baited with cut mullet. Fish the grass islands at high tide OR oyster bars/sand flats adjacent to the islands.

Do you know if this same technique would work in the grass islands in poquoson?

are you fishing right up next to the grass?

18-24 inches? or feet?
Honey Hole
Yes, very close to the islands unless there's a scattered oyster bar. As for the leader, 18-24 INCHES... heck, I'd never be able to cast a 24 foot leader!

We fished for ~2 hours last night... plenty of fish in all 4 places we stopped.

Yeah - he's talking about the grass island and oyster bars inside lynnhaven. I use pretty much the same set up as HoneyHole described. They can also be caught on artificials, but cut bait has always worked better for me.

i live back in lynnhaven and fish out of my jon boat. you can find the fish right up next to the grass just make sure you dont anchor too close and dont make too much anchor noise, it might spook the fish. for some reason i always have the most luck with the bigger ones near old broken down docks.
