squidstick
left sunset @ 6, pulled up to the green can off vb @ 7 dropped an eel nobody home.
went to the first green on the bouy line @ fish on. fight it for about 5 min broken leader. move to the next bouy fish on, five minute fight comes off, damn.
move to the next bouy drop, fish on,fish off, fish on, off, on fish wouldnt comit.
move to the next bouy drop, fish on, starts screamin drag and catches some air right beside the bouy, got him away from it and start drifting away from the bouy
finally got the fish back up after about 20 min @ its the biggest cobe id ever seen,
probablly 90lbs + even had a 12" remora and age spots. fought for about another 15 min and a freighter started bering down on us, and we were right in the middle of the channel so we needed to land the fish. of course a couple months ago i had a problem w/a green cobe and he stole my gaff. so of course a few people recommended the net, so after a good bit of contemplating i went w/ the net, bad choice. fish went in head first but i couldnt get but less than 1/2 the cobe in the net. he did some kinda crazy flip and came out and broke the leader. crap. after that the wind picked up and a few other boats had already covered the first buoys we went to so we didnt go back. all in all still a good morning.

I'm new to cobia fishing and have tried a few things I've heard about like bucktails and eels. Any other suggestions? I'm also curious about how to fish the bouys? Do you drift them once, or set up for a while and cast all around them? Up real close or stay some distance away? Hoping someone can share their experience. Thanks.

The cobia are heading out now so you might have to wait until next year to get your shot. Later in the summer they hang around the bouys and bridge pilings and cruise around on the surface. This is when most people "bouy hop" and sight cast to them, but you don't always have to see them for them to be there. A lot of people throw live eels at them or other live bait like spot, croaker or menhaden. Bucktails will work also. Earlier in the year when they show up in the bay people anchor and chum and chum and more chum. Water temp needs to be upper 60's for them to start showing up in the bay. Hope this helps.
