Hello all
Went offshore Sat morning. Went out of OC Sat morning around 7am started trolling around the hambone then headed out to Poormans and did nothing. I am just starting and know I suck but that was pityful we ended up getting one FA in the hambone but that was all. I know most all of you fish farther south but can you help me what do you all troll?

thanks
Kevin

One of our stand-bys which produces an amazing variety of fish is a Get Reel MiniBar or TikiBar. They are easy to troll and get fish into your spread! Then a variety of Seawitches, G&H lures and Ilanders rigged with Ballyhoo. Put some more info about what you do, speed, lures, spread set-up, etc. to help us figure out what you may try to increase your hook-ups. What areas do you pick to fish? Are others around you catching...or are you all alone? While there are some regional differences, there are some basics that will work in most places and should help you to lure in more than one FA. Good luck, plenty of help on this Board.
Tight lines.

i was fishing three spreader bars two all green one of them with a bird and the other spreader was pulling a ballyhoo. i also trolled a yozuri bonita, a cedar plug, and a g&h blue/silver/pink/white. i picked oc just cause it was a little easier for me i want to go out of chinco but didnt have my permit. i trailer my boat so i can move around. i try to fish around people but wasnt close enough to see if they were catching anything.

thanks again

First thing you gotta do is find the fish....No sense in putting out a spread if there are no signs of life.....

Look for Birds, rips, weedlines, porpoise, whales...birds...birds....

Once you find the signs of life put your fish finder/depth finder to work and look for marks of bait or fish....when you start marking bait balls work it until you get something......Where there are signs of fish there are usually fish in the area...

Lots of people just pick a spot and start fishing but that's like hunting for a deer on a freeway...it's not gonna be there....if there are no fish in the area, you ain't gonna catch anything......that's my two cents.....Bob
Mega Bite
You have to get out there earlier also leave at about 4 0r 5am not 7 am.You miss the am bite if you leave that late.

What you have sounds pretty good. Some things to consider...

Size of the spreader bars you use. We usually run 6-9 inch baits on our bars. We use a lot of blue and white, blue/pink, dolphin colors.

You may want to try running your spread further back from the boat then you normally do...especially when its real calm out. Fish can get boat shy.

Cedar plugs we run tight to the boat...for some reason the fish will come right up on them there.

Try working the area longer if you get a hit. If there's one fish, there's more.

Make sure your ballyhoo are fresh and not washed out.

Hope this helps. Sometimes though the fish just don't bite. You'll get them next time. Any other questions please feel free to ask.

Bob brought up a great point. You need to have a game plan on where you want to go, but be looking for those signs of life on the way out...you could be running right over fish. Finding bait is the key.

While trolling watch you fish finder. If you're not marking anything and there are no signs of life and no hits, have a back up place to go.

Listen to the radio and see if there's action any where else, but don't let that dictate your day...you could end up running all over the ocean.

Leaving early is a good idea, but don't run in the dark if you're not comfortable.

Try to buddy up with some one else so you can have a partner out there, not only for finding fish, but for safety as well.
