Honey Hole
I met up with Brian for the first time to take him pup fishing inside Lynnhaven yesterday. We motored to a couple creeks to castnet the mullet noticing the tide was extremely low wit hthe full moon matched to the SE wind... good for netting bait, bad for fishing some of my spots.

We moved around a few times, finally beaching the boat for a bit. I took a walk to survey the area for a return trip... looking to see the guts/cuts on the sandbars etc. I found a slough that had some deeper water and thought it was worth a try. I went back to the boat and got Brian after filling a zip lock with chunks of mullet.

We got to the slough, tossed in baits and BAM... fish on. They were stacked in there good; we ended up catching ~17 before the tide moved back in and the fish started roaming the flats. All the fish were between 20 - 24", two had jewlery, and two had 16 spots... pretty. All released.

Not sure what you mean... but, I "chunked" it for bait.

Ok...for us beginners...How do you "chunk" bait?

I've caught mullet and fished them whole, but have never cut them up. How do you cut them? Like steaks or fillets?
Honey Hole
By "chunking", I mean steaking them. From a finger sized mullet, I'll get two baits, three if they're in the 6" range. I like to use chunks that have some guts in'em... the meaty tail section isn't as good IMHO. I've filleted the big ones before, but feel the fillets don't catch as well as the gut filled chunks. Some folks like to use the head... if you want to do that, make sure you leave some meat/guts on it. I've fished some mullet whole and didn't catch as many fish.

Are thy edible? What is the size limit for them? I have never caught puppies before and I am heading to the area Sunday for some spot and croaker which are not available down here. food-smiley-004.gif smilie_flagge13.gif vbsf_th.jpg

Excellent! Thanks Honey Hole for taking the time to help us beginners. I'll have to try your chunking next time I'm out.
