Went Speck fishing today in Lynnhaven. Rain in the morning, wind in the afternoon but did manage to catch dinner. Drifted up into a very shallow marshy area at dead high tide and saw Puppy Drum on the surface feeding. They looked like sharks prowling the shallows. Threw lots of grubs but no takers. What would have been my best shot at hooking up? I've heard cut mullet or menhaden works but I have no clue how to rig it in such shallow water. We're talking 2 to 3 feet. Any experts out there who can advise? Thanks.

I use a 1.5 - 2 oz egg sinker above a swivel. 12-18" mono leader and a 4/0 hook... add a chunk of mullet and hang on.

When they're feeding agressively like that, a top water bait (Mirro-Lure Top Dog, Small Popper) can be deadly.

I agree with the prior post. If you hav enough room on your boat and you are in a position to anchor....do so. While you have your bottom rig out on light drag try some artificial stuff..mirro lure and the deadly gulps. The colors on the other hand will take time, I like orange bellied baits late fall, early winter for artificial, white for gulps anytime. Top dogs are fun even if you catch one in an outing (personal preference). I just love fishing the surface. Old school stuff like mepp's works as well. I have to be perfectly honest for you though, if they are finning the surface and you can't catch them you are doing something wrong. Try tipping whatever you throw at them with something....a small chunk of bait or even get you some bunker oil to soak your artificials. Lastly is my "go to" bait for shallow water- a chartreuse stump jumper (1 oz will do fine) tipped with a small sliver of squid sandwiched with a chartreuse grub. Small sliver meaning 1 inch cut about a quarter of an inch wide. Reds stalk and attack and that tiny bit of scent will make the difference for there is a ton of bait in Lynhaven for them to move on to...

Just another quick note...chartruese gulp grubs (3 in) have helped me catch reds, stripers, specks, and even my first Cobia...ever!
