Aside from trolling, any ideas on what rod/reel/lure combos seem to work the best around the HRBT?
Andrew K
if the stripers are there......anything. ha. storm lures work well if they are schooling. if they are on top, any sort of top water popper works. bucktails, grubs, etc. anything that resembles a fish.

Go at night and cast under the light lines. Storms, bucktails, topwater, just try stuff until you find what works.

Don't forget about live baiting with spot around the islands of the CBBT. Might pull in some bigger fish.

As the other guys said, topwater action this time of year is the best. With the warmer water temps, casting topwater plugs or storms right into the rocks around the islands can land some fish. Try to fish on the side of the island with the most wave action. The stripers will be bedding right in the rocks waiting for bait fish to be washed into there by the waves.

At night, working the light lines is key. Sometimes they are stacked up like logs along the surface. When the tide is moving, they'll hit just about anything.

red head white body mirror lures run just under the surface if you fish against the tide you can let your line slack and run back between pylons with out recasting really help full in windy conditions. angry-smiley-013.gif

also when the tide is running strong use a three way swivel short loop on bottom with 10 oz. or heavier then use a four foot leader and any favorite bait or lure. let out enough line to get close to structure but not in it. a single hook with a long strip bait will flutter in the current. action-smiley-033.gif

good luck and tight lines food-smiley-004.gif

A medium/ Light action Spinning outfit is fun for Striper if you see them up top.I also carry a 10 weight Fly Rod for the Hawgs in the winter time when I see them busting the surface.

Thanx for the advice, I'll try them and see what happens, hopefully I can get some night time fishing in.

Ive never done it, but Ive heard guys who chunk menhaden for them.

Id rather cast for them myself.

dont forget about bunker chunking, just anchor of the bridge, put down fishfinders w/bunker chunks and start trowing out chunks of bunker. works great at the M&M.

Just wanted to say thanks for the ideas. This is my first year in the lower Ches. Bay. and you all have touch me more about bay/Ocean fishing then I would have ever read about.

Which length storm lure do you recommend? Stripers on line has several different lengths.

I would use a six inch storm. That might help weed out catching the undersized schoolies.

For you guys who are new to the area, we should be having meet and greet's coming up that will center around striped bass and rigs.

Casting storms, wind cheaters, bucktails and such at the rocks and bridge supports is alot of fun.

Someone might jump in and explain how to weight down a storm enough to get it down to the tubes and catch bigger fish.

I will probably not begin targeting rocks for a few more weeks. Im kind of hell bent on some other fish right now. Tuna being just one.

At our meet and greets we should be having a demo of various rigs including umbrella and mojo/ mojo daisy chains.

Another idea is to buy these rigs at local tackle shops, just ask for them and they will be more than happy to sell you some.

Last year I ran stretch 25's in the bay in the early Dec fishing. As the fishing changed I ran and caught more fish on the mojo daisy chain.

When we fished in the ocean, we mostly ditched the 25's and went to all mojo daisy and umbrella rigs.

Bunker chunkin' on the light line with a side order of spot or croaker on a fish finder rig...fish on!!!
Getaway
For some real fun, try drifting with live eels!! Using a bobber or not, this is one way to use light tackle and still catch large (40" & up) stripers during Nov. & Dec.
m.t. pockets
Eels eels eels and not those sissy eels that you guys had for the stripper tournament last winter , but the big ones. Also Diggin i havent seen anyone doing that at the southern end of the bay much. it works when all else fails
