Most of the fish caught were on overnighters. Note water temps.

Look at that break south of the Wilmington canyon, that is probably the tuna front. Yesterday the break was at the north wall of the canyon, today it is just south.

The cape may reports look the best, wonder why.

I don't think this is looking too good.
Oregon Inlet fleet now whacking yellow fin south of the Inlet. As the Oct. days go by - with no tuna bite here - the season maybe getting away as I am sure the wind will pick up soon. Good luck to you guy's this weekend this could be a good shot to get some nice ones--I am headed to South Dakota for a bird hunting trip.

I think we're still a couple of weeks out Kent.....looking at my logs on 11/05/2006 we wacked a limit of YFT by Noon....had 1 other good weekend we made it out in November and my last catch of YFT out of here was first week in december at the norfolk Canyon......water temp was 69 - 70 early november and mid 60's in december.....same day we caught em at the canyon they killed em down south by the 200 line with limits on many boats...after that it was striper season...so I think the best is still ahead of us....Bob
Ktrain
from what i understand the best is yet to come, it's just been too warm but seems to be changing end of this month.......look out!

OI fleet has not been catching them in any type of number's they are few and very far between, they two are waiting.......
peejcj8
We caught them out of Va Beach in Dec last year.

Im thinking there is no reason for the tuna to come past us yet, they are still hanging 100 miles north right now, with Bluefin coming right behind them.

I hope Grady is wrong about the winds.
Mega Bite
Its going to happen soon this Temp. drop could trigger those torpedos with fins to head this way.

i can't wait. im working lots of overtime the next two weekends...all to pay to go offshore.

bob, keith, eric, i want to get out offshore with you guys at least once before the seasons over. biggrin.gif

I think those tuna out of OI are there all the time...steep bottom contours are great spots for upwellings from the Gulf Stream. Plus any place named the "Tuna Hole" has to have tuna for more than a couple of months.

There's still some big boys to our north and their temps are just now falling into the low 70's...some tunas were caught in 75 degrees. This cool snap is the best thing that could happen.

Hoping for some big ones on Sunday!!

Fished in Jersey 10/14/07. We had a slow dayin the Mudhole, but we heard a report from someone who fished aboard the Gambler. On their overnighter Oct 13-14th, they got a total of 120 tuna! It was the best trip ever for the history of the boat! I hope they make it down this way soon. I'd like to find a report posted somewhere to confirm this catch, but it's got me a little excited.
skinnys-kid
That's a lot of tuna!! I'll do some searching today to find a report confirming, but I wouldn't doubt it.
RockStar2
I couldn't find anything on the Gambler, but the Big Jamaica had 112!

"10/21 report

Tuna fishing was good again Thursday night. We did catch som nice size mahi-mahi during the night but the tuna action did not start until the morning. When they did start to feed the action was good.

High hook was:

Steve Kazbuski from Long Island, NY with 6 longfin,

Gloria Snyder from Walnut Port, PA boated 3 tuna and 1 mahi,

TS Thompson from Oceanside, NY landed a nice yellowfin and a longfin.

10/18/07

October and November are traditionally good months for canyon tuna chunking and so far it is going very well. The Wednesday night trip produced another excellent catch of yellowfin and longfin tuna. When we arrived at the 100 fathom line the water temperature was 65 degrees. There were porpoise, mahi-mahi and plenty of squid in the area. We landed a few mahi-mahi shortly after we anchored. It was quiet until 4 AM when the first tuna hit the deck. The next fish was not landed until 5 AM.

At 6:30 AM the tuna schooled under the boat and began to feed. It was just a slow pick until 8 AM when they really turned on. After that it was good fishing until we headed home.

The high hook was Dennis Muhlenforth, Hockessin, De. with 5 longfin and 2 yellowfin. His largest weighed 100 lbs. Other notable catches were:

Mike Jung, Queens, NY boated 5 longfin and 1 yellowfin.

Frank Graziano, Delaware landed 2 yellowfin and 3 longfin.

Kevin Feaster, Downington, Pa boated 3 yellowfin and 1 longfin and a 10 lb. Mahi.

Fred Blackman, South Orange, NJ had 1 yellowfin and 3 longfin.

Kirk Kresge, Cresco, Pa. had 3 longfin.

Samantha Poallillo, Cresco, Pa. caught 2 longfin on her first time salt water fishing trip.

John Canning, Seaside, NJ had 1 yellowfin and 3 longfin.

Mike Vastola, Lavalette, NJ caught 2 longfin.

Mark Miller, Rochester, NY had 3 longfin.

John Legendiger, Gilbertsville, Pa. landed 1 yellowfin and 1 longfin

Dominick Ceppaluni, Manalapan, NJ caught 1 yellowfin and 1 longfin.

Wayne Ryback, Glendora, Pa. had 1 yellowfin, 1 longfin and 1 Mahi.

10/17/07 Report

This was a very good week of Canyon tuna fishing. After a slow trip Friday night fishing really turned on. Saturday night we returned to the same area. Fishing started out slow but by 3 AM it turned on and continued until 6:30 AM. The catch was a mix of 40 – 75 lb. yellowfin and 35 – 50 lb. longfin tuna. Tuna were jumping out of the water at times all around the boat. Most hookups were 80Õ to 130Õ down on either jigs or bait.

Most passengers caught their limit of yellowfin and some added a longfin or two to their catch. During the peak of the action I was able to catch my limit of yellowfin up to 65 lbs. in 45 minutes on a jig while I took over the chunking duties.

This was, by far, the best trip of the season. A few notable catches are listed below:

Gloria Snyder, Walnutport, Pa. caught 3 yellowfin and 2 longfins.

Boomer Fasching, Danielsville, Pa. landed 3 yellowfin and 1 longfin.

Joe Scala, Factoryville, PA with 3 yellowfin and 1 Mahi.

David Thomas, Tamiment, PA had 2 yellowfin and 2 longfin.

William Rowe Party (George Rowe, Bob Ruis, Fred D.) Hackettstown, NJ landed 12 yellowfin, 3 longfin and 5 Mahi-Mahi.

David Jones, East Orange, NJ with 2 yellowfin and 2 longfin.

Fred Dargenio, Hopatcong, NJ caught 3 yellowfin, 2 longfin and 1 Mahi."

Got out on the Miss Barnegat Light for their overnighter 10/21-10/22. They cruised all the way down to the Baltimore Canyon. Had a slow pick of yellowfin from midnight through the morning. One sword about 90lbs was boated, and one a little smaller was lost at the boat. The boat ended up with 12 yellowfin, 3 albacore and 1sword. There were 31 fishermen. I ended up with one yft about 75 lbs and my friend Matt had one about 45lbs.
