I'm signed up for this trip and looking to get the skinny on what to expect. Anybody going? I'm bringing a TLD 50 setup for the swords and tuna, and Torium 30 setup for the tiles. Any extra tackle needed or is it all provided, never been offshore night fishing? I ain't sleepin!

I'd spend the extra 20 to rent a pole, even if you're bringing your own... I brought my own 6/0 senator w/ 80 lb mono on it... They'll be running the same set up for the big ones, but you can also use their smaller reels for the tile fish if they stop to drop for them on the way out... I think their smaller rigs are 4/0 or equivilant.. I'd devinitely recomend bringing a belt.. Otherwise, if you hook on you'll have to find somebody else that brought one that fits you..... All the tackle you need will be provided for you... I went on the 14th, and I'm going back out on the fourth of November....... I had a blast....... I'd definitely advise bringing a belt though... Carl had to let one guy borrow his belt because he didn't have one... By the time they got the belt on him, the sword had already taken him from the bow of the boat to the opposite side of the stern.... His girl was the first one on that hook up, but the damn thing almost dragged her over the rail... lol Great bunch of guys out there.. Wish you the best of luck..... Make sure you give us a detailed report.. Hopefully the tuna will be out there for you guys..

Craig...good luck on the trip. Another week and the tuna might be hanging around...I hope!!

Thanks for the info guys. I believe I am going on the 11th-12th nov. trip. Tuna's should be in abundance then. Thanks for the belt tip. I will have to invest in one. I am going to rent a pole instead of taking one. But what about the cooler size. I do NOT HAVE a large cooler. just a 55qt. one. probably to small. I'll have to see if I can borrow one. Thanks again and good luck. Keep us informed I will be looking at the post Tuesday morning to get your report. Hope tunas are there if so I may go on the 4th instead of the 11th.

I'm confirmed and am planning to bring a couple of Avet standup rigs. I'm also making wind-on leaders with 9/0 tuna circles. For the guys who've done this before, do I need to wire on an egg sinker?

Also, does anyone know when Rudee Charters will call it off, if 1) the tuna still aren't around, or 2) the forcasted wind is? In other words, do I need to stay around the phone Saturday night?
cirwin
Rob- I don't think you need a big cooler for the boat, it has a slush tank. I never been on this one but they usually organize the catches, citations, etc. Keep one in your truck if you want to take whole fish home.

Steve- I think the captain may post something on the Rudee Tours/Headboat Board if he calls it. They boated three sword last trip. Hope its a go!
RECOVERY
cirwin, I'm headed down with steve55, I talked with Rudee and they said for the
deep drops you need around 330 feet of line for the tile's.
Hope the tuna show-up qwick!!!!!!
Look forward to meeting you!!!! usaflag.gif

The way they had the egg sinkers rigged up was they ran the egg sinker on the mono, and put a rubberband under it.. If I'm not mistaken they only used 5/O circle hooks... I only saw a couple of poles with wind on leaders on them... If they're going to cancel, They'll know a couple days before the trip.. If they don't call you, I'd call them...

I'll let you know how we did on the fourth.. That's when I'm going out... They have slush tanks on board, so really all you need your cooler for is what you're going to eat and drink..... When I went on 10/14, I brought the biggest cooler on the boat... It was a pain getting it on, and taking it off, but it was still worth it... It's the biggest igloo we could find, and it's got a padded top that came in really handy.. Any cooler will do though... All the fish are strung up with your name on them, and put in the slush tanks...

Yeah, we deep dropped for Tile fish in just over 300 feet of water.... It was well over 500 feet where we anchored for the night, about 2 miles away from where we dropped for the Tile fish.... Tried for the tuna at all different fathom ranges with no success... When were you guys going out anyway.. I'm trying to get in touch with other people going on the fourth of November....

Thanks much! Recovery indicated that the mates may not be overly happy with the braid on my reels. I'd hate to have to strip them and replace the braid with mono, but will do so if I can't fish my rigs otherwise. Anyone know for sure?

There were definitely at least two people running braid when I went on the 14th.. Not sure what the mates thought about it though..... I definitely recommend taking your setup, and renting one.... That's what I did last time, and I'll be doing the same on the 11/4 trip. All their 6/0 rigs were spooled with 80 lb mono.. I took my own 6/0 senator with 80 lb mono as well...

Thanks for all the replies.

Recovery, my buddy from Fredericksburg is headed down too. Looking forward to it. Should be a good time.

I'm looking at the same. Regardless, thanks much for all the info, guys.

If you guys get out, make sure the capt and mates know that you're active members of VBSF...lets them know their sponsorship is paying off and is appreciated.

Again good luck and let us know how you do!!

I heard about the first trip I went on through email... I failed to tell the captain about it last time... I'll definitely remember when I go out on the fourth... I wasn't the only one on board that heard about the trips through VBSF.net.. There were a few other guys as well....... Great site, and great Captain and crew on the Rudee Angler..... I'll probably be at the next meet and great as well.. Big thanks to all the administrators, and supporters of this site....

Hope everybody has a good time at Dirty's tommorrow night..... I don't know if I can make it yet, but it would be nice.... I'm right down the road, but I've racked up an estimated 1 thousand in fishing expenses come 11/4.... That's a bit of a chunk in a one month time spand for me...... Might be out there though.... Hope you guys have a good time!!!!

Just called, the trip Sunday is cancelled due to weather.
Sux! been waitin for this for a month
cry_smiley.gif

I guess a few more weeks won't hurt
only 4 slots remain for next week
if you want to reschedule for next week, I would not wait very long
cirwin
Thanks for the heads up and I guess its just how the weekend weather goes.
drawinout
Guess I'll see some of you guys on the fourth of November then... That's the weekend I was signed up for anyway..
