Full Version: Fishing in the Bay this week....?

I have posted on this sight once or twice before. I just got my boat (Boston Whaler Dauntless 18) down here from Lake Erie and have it at Seaford now. I live near Toano.

When I talk to folks, they all speak, right now anyway, of the great night fishing for stripers. Is there any good fishing in the Bay during daylight hours right now?

I am a retired math teacher/basketball&tennis coach from Indiana, but also a SERIOUS FISHERMAN. Fish in the Ontario wilderness each year and also fish Lake Erie 6-7 times/year for walleyes. But I moved here to fish saltwater!

Like a couple of others who I have seen posting here, I am absolutely new to the area and would love to find someone to fish with...sounds like that's not that easy. I would love say my fishing buddy (for the last 25 years) will come down from Indiana and fish with me (also a SEROIUS fisherman!), but I lost him to cancer last summer. But, anyway, yeah, I'm like a bunch of others who have posted here, I'd love to find someone who knows a little bit about fishing the Bay, and would be willing to go out of Seaford area. Like somebody else who has a current post on this board, I can go by myself, but would rather have somebody to go with.

Sincerely,
The 3 Point Shooter

Can't help you as far as finding someone to fish with, but I can steer you in the right direction as far as learning the Bay game. Most of the folks who run the tackle shops are more than willing to share good advice as far as where and when to fish. The best source of info I have found is the Fisherman magazine. It is a small weekly magazine that gets delivered to your door 50 times a year. It is full of fishing reports from Delaware down to North Carolina. The writers also do a good job writing articles on where and how to catch fish in our area. I cancelled all my other fishing magazine subscriptions after a while. It really is a good source of information and only cost about $26 a year to subscribe to. This chat board is also pretty informative and a lot of the folks on here are very willing to share information on locations and techniques. You might want to consider getting on a charter boat or head boat in your area too. The night time striper bite is a lot of fun and sounds like you have a good size boat to do it with. We also catch good numbers by day. The water is a bit warm right now so the best time is the crack of dawn or the last 2-3 hours of daylight around any of the bridges. Later on in Nov. you can launch early in the morning and go out and look for the birds working the water. It gets pretty easy then.
Welcome to the area and good luck on the water.

Flounder fishing is good right now.

Rockfish can be caught during the daytime now. I caught some yesterday trolling. But it seems that the evening hours have been the most productive.

Welcome to the board! I'm out of Poquoson, and am always looking for folks to fish with. I recommend you attend one of our Meet & Greets, this month it's at Dirty Dicks at Rudee Inlet, VA Beach.

Yes flounder fishing is good, but they're probably in the act of moving to deeper water, the CBBT and wrecks near the mouth of the bay are probably the best bets for flatties at this point.

Thimble shoal light right out the mouth of the James River is a good spot around sundown for striper and blues. Yeah the light line around the bridges really concentrates the striper and other fish for that matter making them easier to target.

We just came from Chesapeak VA. Fishing off the Oceanview Pier. We're planning on coming back this weekend. Live in North Carolina but drive to Virginia just for the fishing. Would really enjoy going out with you on your boat.
