First of all God bless to all the soldiers men and women fighting for our freedom. Was down in Hatteras at Teachs for the weekend with the wife and kids. Could not fish Friday or Saturday do to weather but did talk the wife into letting me stay Sunday and fish and she would help with the seven hour ride home. Ran into knot wishin Todd from the board Saturday evening and we buddy boated to the Rockpile early Sunday am. We jigged all day until 2.00 pm and here is the catch.
1 52lb wahoo and lost another boat side about 20 lbs
4 King macs up to 27lbs
3.5 Black fin tuna one was severed in half by a hoo right under the boat one was sashimi on the boat
4 peanut dolphin from a school of about 50
8 Red snapper
4 large trigger fish
1 golden tile This is the first tile i have ever caught on a bare jig.
5 sea bass
1 grouper and dumbass me dropped it over board unloading the catch at the dock.

Threw back a bunch of amberjack, barracuda and alberts and lost a whole lotta jigs to the unknown. cudas, sharks, macs and hoos.

After two years of learning and losing jigs here is what i believe to be the very best jigging set up. Shimano med/hvy jigging rod-okuma V80A reel with 80lb power pro in green, bimini twist on the end with a shimano loop to loop 30 or 50lb flouro top shot and my all time most productive jig is a river2sea 180 gram knife jig in pink or blue with two gammy 6/0 hooks on top and one on the bottom. It was nice meeting you Todd and look forward to fishing with you soon. Out to the Wilmington on Friday back to Hatteras Nov.1 Tight lines to all. Conch

Nice dinner for the crabs. You probably could've found it. Just hop in and feel around. I've done it a few times in Teach's.

Good report though.

Very nice to meet you too Mike. Thanks for putting the word out on the great jigging opportunities. Jeff (top gun )will post our report as we were in his boat this time. You are hard core with a 7 hour drive home. I was tired just sipping from my cup while Jeff drove me back to meet my wife. Sounds like your wife is a trooper as well. Good luck in wilmington and Iam looking forward to fishing with you again.

Verticle jigging offshore is a technique that could bring home some Tuna when they arent hitting on the Surface.I would like to try that myself. those new Butterfly jigs the Japanese have developed look really good.

Awesome Guys,
Glad to hear the Rockpile still holding fish, after that wahoo I got last week. That jigging sounds really productive. Gotta try it. How did you work the jig? Down to the bottom and then Jig- Reel Jig-Reel to The Surface, Or was it down to a certain depth and Jig that depth till you finish your drift? Gotta love this website for what you can learn

First find the structure or rocks you are dropping on,determine the best and longest drift you can obtain with out moving alot. spread out along the gunnels three guys on my 29 is optimal but i have fished five have the middle guy drop straight down the right side guy cast to the right the left side guy cast to the left all a minimium 15 seconds apart you dont want to tangle 80 lb braid while jiggin, drop to bottom watch for line to stop reel in 5 cranks and jig for 1minute short sharp up and down motion no hits open bail and let drop again to bottom should only take three seconds to hit bottom repeat sharp up and down motion for thirty seconds then bring up thru the water column the last 50 feet up i get very eratic and extremely fast jig and retreive you can not reel fast enough for tuna, wahoo and k macs. Why i like jigging every one is involved hands on ,its very productive,I save alot of fuel, I always bring home something,Its light tackle big fish action one on one you and the fish. It breaks up the day from trolling for hours its quiet and its one more weapon on a slow day. Conch

Sweet!!

Good job conch, Maybe one day Ill give it a try. First Ill have to master trolling, second Ill have to fork out 500 bucks for one of those sweet spinning reels.

So It might be awhile, sounds fun though. Having a rod in your hand when a tuna or wahoo hits has to be cool.

Congrats on the catch... yikes.gif Wow. Sounds like a cool technique. I'd like to try it some time.

I see SWS report on jigging all the time. Especially in the gulf. Seems like a killer way to catch some big tuna. Good job guys !
