The winds plagued anglers up and down the coast yet again. However, boats managed to get out a couple days. They not only found themselves fishing in Summer-like conditions, but they also brought home the fish.

VBSF Sponsor “Backlash” fished a weather window and put its charter on some nice Mahi and also scored a release on a White Marlin, which they estimated to weigh 90 pounds or more. The Marlin was fought by Cary Lynch of Baltimore, MD. “C-Note” got out and boxed 15 gaffer Dolphin up to 25 pounds, several bailers and a 30 pound Wahoo. They had a shot at a big White Marlin, but it had other plans. Its unusual to find these fish in such numbers this time of year, but with water temps approaching 75 degrees in some areas, the fish have no reason to move on.

Tuna are still very scarce. They were a couple of Yellowfin landed out of Eastern Shore ports that topped the 70 pound mark. Conditions are indicating the potential for some great tuna action north of the Norfolk Canyon. Cooler water temps are forcing the warm eddies south between the Washington Canyon and the Norfolk. Fishing the cool side of a temp break could prove to be very productive. Boats out of New Jersey and Maryland are now heading further south to find the Yellowfin, indicating a migration is underway. Headboats are landing Yellowfin over 80 pounds and Longfins up to 60 pounds. Most are being caught on the early morning chunk. With dropping water temps, the Norfolk will be heating up soon with big Fall Tuna. The “Rudee Angler” added some overnight tuna chunking trips to its schedule. As long as the weather is fishable, they’ll be out there hunting for the tuna.

Oregon Inlet had a banner week on the Wahoo. Some boats reported being hooked up to several Wahoos at the same time, only to be cut off by others in the school chasing the lure trailing behind a screaming Hoo. Mahi are also hitting the docks at OI. Bailers to Gaffers are being found in great numbers. There were some scattered tunas, both Blackfin and Yellowfin. The Yellowfin ranged from 35 to near 60 pounds. “Outer Limits” out of Pirate’s Cove” brought in a limit of Mahi along with a White Marlin release.

Hatteras boats were land-locked a few days, but once they got out it was Sailfish time yet again. The fish are still there in force. Hatteras Harbor Marina reported good catches of King Mackerel and Mahi along with some scattered Wahoo. Deep-Droppers are still landing Groupers and Tilefish on a regular basis.

Get out there and Catch ‘em Up!!

Great job on the report as usual! Always look foward to reading them. We just need that wind to lay down. action-smiley-033.gif
