After reading a couple of threads on another website, I am confused about some of the smaller tuna and their edibility.
Skipjack, bonita, little tunny, false albacore. Which are edible ?

Dont forget Longfin, and some of the best white meat Albacore.
Mega Bite
Blackfin are really good too.

They all can be consumed, BUT in general like the guys said before, Yellowfin, Bluefin, Blackfin, Longfin and BigEye are the table fair tuna. Skipjacks, False Albies and bonita have darker meat and can be used in tuna salad, but normally thrown back or used for bait.

We had a Charter with a great Korean guy aboard. After we boated the first False Albie, we were going to keep it for bait...never made it back to the dock as we consumed it as Sushimi with some Korean Red Sauce. Although somewhat chewy, the flavor was mild and not bad at all. blink.gif

There's a great book out by Vic Dunaway..."Sportfsih of the Atlantic". It gives you fish ID's, tips on catching, where they live, and how they taste. Covers from Marlin to baitfish. Sells for around $15.00 and great to keep on the boat. I think Long Bay Pointe used to have them, but any bookstore should as well.

Skipjacks are the only ones with black stripes toward the rear of the belly. False albacore, aka little tunny or fat alberts, have a wormy looking striped pattern on the back and a few black spots in an arc from their pectoral fin to their belly. They are football shaped. Bonita have bigger stripes on their back, a larger mouth and larger teeth. False albacore are the bloodiest and most oily. They are great shark bait and strip baits. Skipjacks are lighter than fat alberts. They are ok to eat, but better live baits for large pelagics. If you are eating them you are probably a bad fisherman or at least unlucky. Bonita have light meat and are actually pretty good, but they are the smallest of the 3.

Hope that helps,
Bill

Thanks for all of the replies.
There is a link on the Board from a year or so ago which I found after I made the posted question. That link goes to some pics, if anyone else is interested. Just search for "tuna" and you will find it.
