I have a nice credit at Bass Pro and am shopping for the ultimate cold weather gear for going out on my Center Console in Jan/Feb.

What is the best way to stay dry and warm ? Jump Suits, bibs ? What about those rubber boots ?

What is the best strategy ? Any recomendations ?

Dan

Grudens are great, can be used for any rain fishing and really knock the wind off you. If your wet in Oct- April then you are cold.

I have a set, but they are made by carhartt and they are green so I can hunt in them also. I have the coat too but i have never worn it, It has never gotten cold enough to wear it. I wear a Gortex Military woodland parka generally, it is thin and works.

If you watch the Bigest catch, they are wearing probably long underwear with another layer then a hooded sweat shirt with grudens on top. If that is enough for them guys, then that will work during the worst of weather here.

Footwear, you can get shrimp boots at walmart for 12 bucks, if you want something nicer you can pay alittle more and look cooler. The shrimp boots keep your feet dry and do not have black soles. Alot of non boat owners forget about black soles and show up at the boat with big hunting boots on. I do not care as much as some, but Im sure others might not even let them on the boat. Also big hunting boots in a tight area of a boat are very clumsey and if you step on someones toes that can ruin their day. I broke a guys toe one day, so i know.

If you do not have curtains on that sea hunt, maybe ask for curtains for Christmas.

get some offshore angler bibs - they are pretty cheap and make every bit of difference. I have had my o/a bibs for a while and love them. the snap has busted off the side but its no biggie. best cold weather combo I have found is pattagonia base layer then snowboarding pants with bibs/jacket on outer layer.

Bass pro and cabelas have foul weather gear. The one i use is a cabella's bib pant and coat. They are made of Goretex which keeps me dry, and they are tough. The secret is layering. The first layer is what they call a " wick " layer. Shy away from cotten, esecially socks. If you sweat, it absorbs the moisture, and basically keeps it against your skin. Thermal underwear are bad !! Under armor makes some good stuff for the "wick " layer. 2nd layer. Fleece is the way to go, It breaths and keeps you warm. Then the third layer should be worn to keep you dry. Gore tex, Grundens, Offshore angler. They all make this stuff. Don't scrimp on fould weather gear. Staying dry and warm is the most important thing to do when fishing in cold weather. As far as boots. I have a pair of Penn boat boots and a pair of wagner insulated boat boots. The penns do fine, in The winter i wear a wool thermal sock( again no cotton ) The insulated boots are great when it is cold, But thay almost keep your feet TOO warm. Hope this helps, Merry Christmas !!

I see those mechanics gloves, they are they best, unless they are wet. I keep a pair of them and Neoprene gloves.

Grundens or Helly Hansons,

Grundens when it's really cold and the H/H's in milder temps. Wash them up at the end of the day hang em to dry. As nearly everyone has stated, layering is the key. ICoopers carries both brands.

As for the gloves, ICoopers has a wide selection as well.

Good luck!!

I would also vote for the Mustang suit. In addition to being warm, they also function as a flotation device and will protect you from hypothermia if you fall overboard.

To keep dry...nothing like the Grundens. To keep warm, layer up like Jeff said. The bad thing about that is is you go over, you'll weigh a ton...that's where Charlie's Mustang suit come into play. I say this, but I'm they guy out there with 4 layers on under my Grundens...but if I go when I'm fishing, I'm in Heaven already!
