Hello,
I'm coming back to Va Beach to chase stripers and visit with old friends. I've done tons o largemouth fishing but not much ocean going striper fishing. I'll be fishing with by brother-in-law this weekend. We'll be dragging 'brellas and mojos most of the time I'm sure. Should I bother bringing my heaving bass tackle along (2 rods max)? I was thinking that there might be a chance to cast to fish crashing the surface. Is that a realistic option or am I dreaming?
Thanks in advance...

IT DOSE HAPPEN I ALWAYS KEEP A ROD RIGGED WITH A JERK BAIT. I GOT ONE LAST JAN. ON A JERKBAIT THAT WENT 37" AND NEXT CAST A FAT 34" THEN OUR EEL ROD WENT NUTS WHEN IT WAS OVER WE ONLY HAD 1 ROD LEFT IN THE WATER. I BAITED ANOTHER ROD AND WAS PUTING IT OUT AND THE LAST ROD WENT DOWN. 6 FISH IN LESS THAN 10 MIN. SO BRING YOUR CASTING RODS AND GET A YOUZRI CRISTAL MINNOW 5 3/8 INCH AND KEEP IT HANDY
GOOD LUCK PAUL

Paul,
Thanks. I'm sold. I'll bring both rods and stop by BPS on the way into town. Big soft plastic jerkbaits, belly weighted hooks and maybe a hard jerkbait or two. What about topwaters like LC Sammys or Zara Spooks?
Thanks in advance...

I always keep spinning rods with bucktails or storms in case we encounter a beehive.

I always keep at least one rod ready with a 6" storm. I use a Penn spinning reel with 10 lb power pro. We usually troll until we find a school of stripers working or mark a ton of bait. We then kill the motor and drift thru the school casting storms. We've done this the past 3 years and caught many a big striper using this method. A lot of times you can watch the big hawgs hitting your bait and then while your bringing her in another big one will follow right behind. Nothing beats it. Trolling just fills the time until we can find a school working.

Don't be afraid to let the bait sink. Sometimes they will hit it near the surface other times I cast up current and let it sink for a good bit before closing the spool and doing a slow retrieve. Tight lines.

and don't forget to put a red nosed zara spook on another bass rod for when they are rolling on the surface. Caught a 38" on topwater on a bass rod. You'll never want to jig again. Also good to throw over fish coming to the boat, cause like 71 whaler said, their not alone.

We fished between Sandbridge and Dam Neck on Friday and did very well. Got skunked on Saturday and Sunday though.
