If you "accidently" catch a 45" or more striper in the bay will it qualify for a length release citation?

Not sure how you do that by "accident", but yes you can catch and release stripers in the bay. They do qualify as release citations.

You Know when you see birds working in the bay and the man comes and questions you and you tell him you are casting storms for tautog.

can you target catch and release stripers in the bay?

You can catch and release Stripes in the bay.
although last year I had the coast guard stop me on 1/3 and told me I could not - did not argue and headed toward the ocean --- they had big guns. angry-smiley-013.gif

catch and release is perfecty legal, just don't have ocean fish in the box. they probably didn't have anything to do better that day, just like every other coast guard.

fordbjr, when you call them they will be there for you...or a loved one. then maybe you will feel differently about them having nothing better to do...until then enjoy your fishing and may your luck stay up, anyhow, noone likes a coastie til they need a coastie....

They ought to know what the law is. That is inexcusable for a branch of law enforcement. BTW, before anyone bashes me for my self-evident statement, nobody has more admiration for the military than I.

As someone that is in the military there is no excuse for them not knowing. Ecspecially since they also enforce the regs as part of their duties.

Fishing out of HI a few summers ago, a boat had lost power just outside of the breakers. Luckily they got the anchor down in time to stay out of them. It was a family of 4 that included 2 young kids. The Coast Guard sat on the radio for hours trying to hail other boats in the area to see if they could assist. We were 30 miles off and could've ran in and helped and been there before the CG who has their station 3 miles from the inlet. Since that day I have had 0 respect for the CG. I've got others too but this was the worst.
lewi99
On a calm day the coast guard by law is supposed to allow seatow and tow boat the opportunity to assist unless they are in danger. I would know i was in the CG until last summer. there has been plenty of times that we wanted to assist but were not permitted.
WET HOOK
FORDBJR..I AM CURRENTLY IN THE COAST GUARD AND AM DIRECTLY INVOLVED WITH SEARCH AND RESCUE WITH 8 SAVED LIVES TO MY CREDIT. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY IN THIS WORLD THE COAST GUARD LET A FAMILY FACE GRAVE DANGER...ABSOLUTELY NO WAY. THERE ARE SO MANY SITUATIONS IN WHICH PEOPLE JUST DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR COMMERCIAL ASSISTANCE AND ARE NOT IN DISTRESS. THE COAST GUARD IS NOT OBLIGATED TO GO OUT AND TOW SOMEONE IN. THAT IS NOT WHAT WE ARE HERE FOR...WE CAN SOMETIMES, IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES BUT THAT IS ONLY IF OUR SAR ASSET IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANOTHER CASE WHICH IT VERY WELL COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE INSTANCE YOU SPEAK OF. TO EXPAND ON THAT...THE TRAFFIC YOU HEARD OVER THE RADIO IS REFERRED TO AS A MARB (MARINE ASSISTANCE REQUEST BROADCAST). THIS TAKES PLACE WHEN A VSL REQUESTS IT AND WHEN THEY ARE IN A NON-DISTRESS SITUATION BUT NEED ASSISTANCE. IF THE COAST GUARD HELPED EVERYONE THAT NEEDED A TOW THEIR WOULD BE NO SEA TOW OR TOW BOAT US. ADDITIONALLY SIR, IF YOU CARED SO MUCH AND COULD HAVE GOTTEN THERE BEFORE THE COAST GUARD, THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU? THE COAST GUARD DOES AMAZING THINGS FOR PEOPLE EVERY DAY. YOU HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR THE COAST GUARD....YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO YOUR OPINION, AS DO I, AND I THINK YOU ARE WRONG AND WISH YOU COULD SPEND A DAY ON THE JOB WITH ME AND THE REST OF THE COASTIES I WORK WITH. I AM CERTAIN YOU WOULD GAIN THE RESPECT BACK THAT YOU HAVE LOST. usaflag.gif
fordbjr
I completely understand that the CG saves many lives each year. I commend them for that. Hatteras is a little different situation though. They don't have Sea Tow and the Boat US guy is also the parasailing boat, or at least used to be. We have transferred boats over to the CG that we had been towing from offshore. Like I said, HI is different.
WET HOOK
It is indeed. I am sorry your experience left a bad taste in your mouth. I won't deny that I have seen the CG do some questionable things...but not negligent. Additionally, I do agree with the opinions about the response boat needing to know (COMPLETELY) the regs. It too makes me angry but from a different perspective. Perception is everything and because people don't interact with the CG very often it only takes one bad experience to give someone a lasting bad opinion. Anyhow, no hard feelings here. Good fishing to you.

I talked to someone at the Virginia salwater tournement and they do issue citations awards for trophy striped bass releases in the bay during closed possesion season. If you catch and release a fish in the (EZZ) beyond 3 miles they do not reconize this catch because it is illegal to possess and /or target stripers in this area. As for the Coast Guard, they are probably more familiar with federal laws than state laws but hard to argue with bigger guns
