Fish Dad
Tired of striper, we made the run to the deep with my son Michael Jr. Dr. Ike, Wes, and Lake. Ran to the tile grounds about 17 miles south of the Norfolk Canyon at 47 fathoms. SW winds blowing 10 knots produced some chop but overall it was a nice ride out and slick calm on the way back in.

As soon as we dropped lines in, hooked up. And we stayed hooked up all day. One fish after another. Problem was it was about 15 dogs to every keeper fish. Ike won the prize for the most dogs most of the time bringing up 2 dogs big dogs at once. We tried different drifts and different places but we never found any area that was free of dogs. We even ran to a potential grouper hole at 475 feet but Wes cranks up triple big dogs. Tried squid, bluefish, mackeral, kitchen sponges, and butterfish all the same results.

Whole lot of work but we did manage to bring home a lot of meat. We thought we might have 2 citations tiles but they came in the weigh station just under 10 lbs. Some of the seabass went 4 lbs. Beautiful day for a long run.

Here are a few pics from the day.

I did try some butterfly jigs but the ones I had were not heavy enough to reach bottom. Our drift was 1.2 knots and it took at least 20 ounces or better to hold bottom.

Mike,

Glad you had a good day. I saw you guys cleaning all the fish at the fish station. Do you have any pictures of the Dog fish. I am not sure what they look like. I hear alot of chatter on the radio about people catching them. Is this another name for sand shark?

If you want to see one, hit CH wreck this summer and toss some squid strips to the bottom. Not much for the cooler or table but an awful lot of fun on light tackle if you are in need of some pullage.

Frank, I guess I never think to take pics of dog shark but here is a video we did from last year that shows us catching a lot of dog shark.
