Just wondering if anyone was planning on going offshore out of OI the last week of Feb. or the
first week of March. I hope to take my 24fter offshore. What can i expect? It will be my first time
going out of OI so im wondering if it is easy to follow a charter during this time of the year? Also, is the
fishing any good out of Rudy this time of the year?

It is best to follow someone out of there, even if you have gone out of there many times because the channel shifts and the guys that go out every day know where to go.

Thanks. Does anyone know what time the boats usually leave down there?
SALTY LADY
last couple of times we went on a charter, most boats left betwen 6:00 & 7:00 (october)
that was last year & the charter boat ahead of ran aground & i thought we were gonna plow into him.
keep some distance for sure!
i think the locals mark their channel with bleach jugs
please post when you get back, we are planning a vacation & running our boat down as well.

By and large the Charter boats will run just when its light enough to see what they are doing . They don't run the Inlet in the dark.

You can follow the channel markers (the long way) to the inlet or follow the charter boats down what is called "The Crack" This channel is marked by acnhored jugs and small barrels. For the first time running out of OI you want to follow a charter boat. Once you get to the inlet follow the inlet markers out to the ocean, I am mentioning this because some charter capt's shoot through another "Crack" between the breakers past the bridge, I would not follow them through that channel.

You may want to look at Hatteras that early in the season.

Newt If it is your first time out of OI follow a Charter out between 6 am and 7 am and set your back track function or have every one do a good visual inspection to get back in. If it calls for N or NE in excess of 15mph stay home typically that time of year the Capts are in search of tuna and are looking for temp breaks and good blended water i would venture to say if you run to the POINT and work that area and east of their you could find some fish if you can find some good water. If i had my choice i would run out of Hatteras in late February and early March and work the 280 and SE rocks for Wahoo and Black fins. What ever you do be smart and no your and your boats limitations its very unforgiving territory. If you go i hope you blister em. Conch

Thanks Conch. I was looking at some charts for last week and there were some big temp breaks out there. How many miles is it from OI and what do you think i should run in my spread? I usually run islanders and sea witches w/ med. bally. What should my target fish be?
conch27
Newt. You have a 35 to 40 mile run SE of the sea bouy if you come to a hard temp break this time of year i would get off on the warm water side a couple of hundred yards as you will experience to much current on a very hard break say 62/71 this typicaally creates to much current right on the break. As far as what to troll your right on for YFT or Blue fins i would put a bird way back with a Blue black or blue white islander /hoo combo 6 to 10 feet behind. Alot of times you are catching smaller YFT this time of year and a blue/pink or purple/black tuna feather can mowhawk em. Good luck if you go. The last week of Feb. i will be chasing sailfish in Costa Rica but i will be in Wanchese the first week end in March. Call me if you need help. Conch 301 343 7431

I have 2 1/2 weeks left until I leave for Iraq and I really want to go offshore. Has anyone heard how they are doing out of OI?
Does anyone want to buddy boat in the next couple of weeks?
skinnys-kid
They've been catching some Bluefin and blackfin tuna. Still not many charter guys running out...most are still doing the striper thing. Watch for warm water over the Point and the Tuna Hole...that's when I'd make the run.

Good luck!!

I was looking at the SST charts for Friday and Saturday and there is a 53/74 break out there. I used the link from the home page. Is there another site I can check out? Do guys go off of the chart from the day before and expect it to be at the same place? Ive never used these charts before so I could use all the help I can get. Thanks. Newt
short comings
we are watching the forecast and depending if it turns out to be something we like, we are going to make a run down on Monday 3/3. Last report from fleet came back with bluefin, blackfin and a mako.

Check out this link in the how-to section. Rutgers is the most used free site.
