Moving to Yorktown or Poqouson and new to this board and the area. It's a long way from Fort Polk, Louisiana. I've got a Wellcraft Excel 23 WA and am looking for boat ramp information, best fishing maps, dry storage locations, recommendations for a Mercury mechanic, tide info, other www's, etc. Also into surf and yak fishing; so any and all information would be appreciated. Just like a sponge right now! Thanks.

welcom to the board try to make one of the meet and greets to get to know some of the people on here. ou will find that they are very helpful. Some of the sites you need can be found on this board already. As for your charts visit one of your locak tackle shops and they will have the cahrts you are looking for.

See you on the water.

Welcome to Virginia,

I assume you're in the Army,
Fort Monroe is a perfect place to be reassigned to if you like fishing.
The Base is right next to the Hampton Road Bridge Tunnel.
Fishing is good from there wether you like to fish from the pier, the boat, the surf or the yak.
There is a nice ramp and a marina run by a private company right on base,
If you like to have you boat kept at the dry storage, you just need to go about 5 minutes away from the base.
Fishing is going to be hot and heavy starting around April.
Hope this help.

Welcome! I live in Poquoson, and it has 2 marinas, one of which is full service. Langley AFB is also right in this vicinity, and they have a marina as well. I'm retired USAF, and many of the folks on this board are military, so you should fit right in.

When do you expect to arrive?

Welcome! As Mark mentioned, keep an eye on the board for the next Meet and Greet! The info you can obtain there is endless. Oceans East and Long Bay Point tackle can be very helpfull with info as well. I have always had good experiences with them. You will quickly learn that this board is not like the other in this area. You will find true acurate info here from very knowledgable anglers who are willing and happy to help.

Guys, thanks for the warm welcome and the information. Looking forward to spending my last year in the Army (26 years) up there and looking forward to the M&G. Will probably be in the area in Mar, find a house and school, get the family set and I should be ready to be back on the water in Apr. I am sure I have lots more stupid questions, since "I don't know, what I don't know" about the area; but I need to do some more reading first. Thanks again.

I will have to link up with you and show you around. I used to work over at Monroe and took my boat to work with my numerous times.

You can hit the HRBT with a rock from the ramp, Hampton Bar isn't much further and the CBBT and MMBT are not out of range of your boat.

When the bay gets to cold then I shift my area and head out of Little Creek Amphib base. Another good place to launch were you are close enough to all the hot fishing spots and don't have to deal with busy commercial boat ramps.

Welcome to the site and thanks for your service to our country.

Welcome to the area and you'll love the fishing here. Although the Reds aren't anything like they are in the Gulf, you'll find the variety and seasons exciting and challenging. This board is also a GREAT resource of good people who will go out of their way too help.

Best board there is...

Anyone have any dry storage suggestions? I was told there is a wait on Fort Monroe and I think we will be living in Yorktown. Thanks

I have a friend that keeps his at Sunset Dry Storage and Marina. I have never been there as I keep the Angler in my driveway, but he always has good things to say about them.

Do a quick google on them and it will pull up thier web page.

Thanks Marrdro, I will check them out. Driveway storage would be the best, but I am seeing a ton of HOAs there that do not allow. Just working through the move before we arrive. Thanks for the suggestion!

When you get a chance log into this website: PSWSFA.com. It is the local fishing club closest to where you will live and work. Lots of information on the website. If you make it to our meeting, look me up. I'm Nelson.

Most city ordinances in the area require you have the boat no closer to the street than the closest point of the house to the street, HOAs can be even more restrictive. Poquoson does not have that requirement. If you're living in Yorktown you'll want to check Dare Marina for dry storage.

Welcome,
I keep the 31' at Fort Monroe marina. I have used the ramp in the past with the 23' and it is a good ramp. Parking is about a block away, and you have to schedule around the marina hours if you want fuel there. It is close to the fishing grounds. Give me a shout if you want to go out sometime.

One other thing to think about is the cost of fuel at the Marina where you keep the boat. I know Sunset and Fort Monroe both have lower than the average for fuel prices. I have heard that Ft Monroe also gives a 10 cents discount if you keep your boat there. Sunset and Ft Monroe average $0.25-.35 per gallon less than other marias in the area. This is just a thought. Hope to speak to you on the water. Frank

I slip my boat at Ft Monroe, Old Point Comfort Marina run by MWR. They charge $5/foot which includes electric and water. They currently have a few slips open. Their phone number is 757-788-4308 or DSN 680-4308. Monroe also has a recreation lot that I heard is very resonable if you decide to dry store your boat and trailer it to the marina ramp.

Near Monroe is flounder, croker, spot on Hampton Bar, Cobia at Bluefish Rock, and rockfish at the CCBT only 11 miles.

Good luck on your PCS.

Thanks all; after a three day drive, we arrived and I have seen the ramp at Marina at Monroe. As usual, dry storage on post has a wait list. Thanks for the comments about HOAs. Should close at the the end of the month in a non HOA area in York county. Been to Dare Marina as well so appreciate those comments and insights. I think my drill will be to keep her at the house and trailer to the Monroe ramp.

Couple more dumb questions: How is Bishops Fishing Supply on 17?

So where do I need to go to register my boat here in VA?

And what's this about trailers having to be inspected as well?

Is there anything VA doesn't get money for? :-)

I've never used that one, however, my son works at Wilcox Bait and tackle on Jefferson. Ask for Shawn. Tell him Dad sent ya.

Book mark this site. You will find anything/everything you need with respect to hunting and fishing.

Call Guy at (757) 877-2512. Family friend who owns a auto repair shop. Tell him Marty referred you. He is pretty busy (all good mechs are) and will probably give you a date/time to show up.

Again, welcome to the area. Your gonna love the bay.

NO!!!! There is nothing VA does not get paid for!!! Other than that, I would like to say "Thank You For Your Service TO This Country. We should all feel lucky these men & women are off fighting for us. I have a cousin on his third term in Iraq & 1 in Afghanistan. Bring 'em home safe, all of 'em! & again Thank You Sir and Welcome to VA!!" You will find the folks on this forum are great & will honestly answer questions you may have. smilie_flagge13.gif
