short comings
Headed down Thursday night, checked out the local "Hotspot" for a few cocktails, got some sleep(yeah right) "Awoke" @ 500 am offloaded boat and headed out. Spoke with some local friends and got some intel. Inlet was very reasonable with almost no wind. Entered ocean with maybe 2' swell. About 10 miles out began hitting some patches of dense fog with a few unexpected rain showers none of which lasted long. Confronted with a little chop through the fog and rain areas but it was gone soon enough. Beyond the front, we were greated for the remainder of the day with a 3-5 foot swell probably a good 8 sec apart. Beautiful day!! Now for the not so great part. Most boats, us included, ran a bit north stay out of the heavy fog and chose to work our way back south staying behind the front. Began working in about 250ft of water worked the 100 fathom line with a few other boats for a while. Decided to pull lines and move, upon retrieving the 7 lines, found 5 of them bit off or mutilated behind the hook. No riggers ever poped no clear signs of the rods going but definately hit by something. Not sure exactly where or when or WHAT?? Very uneventful throughout the remainder of the day. Not much of any talk on the radio either. Picked up one more time and decided to run in and take one last shot for some who and whatever around the weather bouy and the Monitor wreck. Enroute found a beautiful well establish weed line running on the 40 fathom line. Work it well in hopes of some dolphin or hoo no luck nothing seen under or around the line other than the most Sea Turtles I've ever seen in one area!
Finish our way over toward the weather bouy when in between the two, the WWB with a b/w TIKI Bar on one of the International 50w starts SCREAMING!!! My buddy Jimmy takes the rod hold on for a minute with the line still smoking off the reel and does all he can to just hold on at that point. Then as fast as it began it was over. Pull it in to find the ballyhoo gone and all the tenticles on the lure gone! Never saw it but obviously a nice hoo. That was it. Beautiful ride the rest of the way in.

Talked with several people back at Teachs and guess we did alright for no meat in box. Teach's report for day was as follows:

1boat= 3 Mahi, 1 lost hoo, and visual on 3 sails
1boat= 1 sail release
1boat= 65 lbs wahoo without its tail (crew chopped it off to fit fish in box)

All other boats = big fat skunk

Oh well, watching window for possible OI trip Monday

Keith, thanks for the report. Sorry for the slow day but we ain't going to catch them sitting at home. Regarding your stolen/mutilated bait with no clips released is my guess peanut dolphin. I've seen some no bigger than the ballyhoo itself try to eat it.

Those Kings will short bite without popping the clip because their teeth are so sharp.

Actually not everyone had a bad day. 4 friends of mine went friday out of Hatteras and went 7/9 on yft and 2/5 on gaffers. The pics are on Tidalfish in the offshore forum. Bite Me also had a good day w/ yft/wahoo and mahi. A marlin and a sail was released by a charter too. Things are finally looking up.

Nice try Keith, It looks like you di everything you could to hook up. But that is why they call it fishing.
short comings
saw the reports for Hatteras Harbor Marina and it definately appears there fleet did a bit better than the Teachs fleet did with some yellowfin, and the first Blue Marlin release of the year. It was a great day on the water for us reguardless. We'll get em next trip.

Couldn't you use a trailer hook to remedy the short bites?

Thanks for the report Keith, sorry no prize for your efforts. Season is early yet...there will plenty of fish flopping around in your boat.

HAHAHA, great quote....thanks for the report it looks like its finally beginning to turn up...going to get out there in the next couple of weeks...looking at OI as well...trying to get done with these finals here
