I have a 20' sea ox and know that my options for going offshore are very limited but I have heard that you can get into most offshore species about 20 miles off Hatteras in the summer. Is there any truth to this? I have a single 175 Yamaha so I don't want to venture but so far off but would definitly consider 20 miles for tuna. Any info would be appreciated.

Tuna would be a great suprise for Hatteras this time of year, but you never know unless you go. Can't catch them from the couch. Mahi should be abundant, look for weed lines and floating debri. Might be a sail around as well. Haven't heard much from Hatteras lately. We are looking at making our fall runs to OI and HI in Sept. Good Luck. If you head out post your report.

I've bailed dolphin right outside of the sea bouy.

Fishing is pretty slow down there right now. A lot of the boats are trying to find the bailers in the morning then going deep dropping. Some tuna were caught the other day but I'm pretty sure those boats made the run to the point.

September usually brings great sailfish and wahoo fishing. Tuna are there year round but pretty tricky to catch in the summer. They will usually start to show up in October.

There have been a few reports of tuna the past couple of days from HI...but not much from OI..so I don't think that those guys are running all the way to the point..especialy with the price of fuel these days.

It is all about your weather at anytime of year with April or November being my favorite time of year in Hatteras anything under 15mph talking wind here is pretty safe out of HI but for most offshore species being 20 miles out NO WAY. I would say its very safe to say 30 miles out but you have to remember when you run from the inlet you can fish the 230,SE and 280 rocks area and only be 17 miles from dry land but 27 to 34 from the inlet depending on the area i fished there last week and we caught Wahoo 16 miles off shore,Blackfin tuna 23 miles offshore and grouper and blueline tile fish 32 miles offshore. I fished with a 20foot Jones Brothers beside me all day but it was a calm day with 5 to 10mph NE winds. Good luck and most of all be safe. Hatteras is a great fishery once you learn it.
