I'm considering trying spoons with in line sinkers or planers in the quest of catching some stripers. Has anyone ever tried this method and if so were you succesful. Thanks for the info

Spoons can be very productive. Just a tip on rigging...about 3 feet up from the spoon tie a barrell swivel in the leader...helps with any line twist. Good luck~

I troll 9 in. crippled alwive spoons quite often with great success. Also recommend the use of a barrel swivel half way between the spoon and the tag end of the leader.

Some of my biggest stripers (40 lbs +) have come on a big gold crippled alewife spoon trolled on a three way rig with 48 oz of lead right down near the bottom. Gold is better than chrome in my opinion. No trailer hooks, but make sure the big hook is sharp! The in line sinkers work fine as well. Vary the weight to put your baits at different depths and cover the water column. Never used a planer for stripers, only offshore. But I certainly don't see why it wouldn't work. And I certainly concur with the swivel. Catch 'em up!

Double your pleasure, double your fun: Rig that spoon about 12' behind the heaviest Mojo you can find. Just don't work it around the bridge or any known obstacles, because break-offs like that get expensive.

I`ve had good success with the spoons you mention.. I use
planners and MoJo`s with them, and by all means add the barrel
swivel about 1/2 way between the bait and the 3 way or planner
to greatly reduce line twist, if you leave out the swivel, you will be sorry.
And stay pretty much in open water, there is alot of bait snagging
structure all around the CBBT.... They do well in the ocean. My .02 worth.

Our biggest fish this weekend was caught on a ch. 9" spoon behind a 48 oz. mojo on the bottom. It was 36.5"

What type of speed do yall travel with the spoons?

I want to thank every body that has shared info on my question about the spoons........also realized that a planer probably won't work because the trolling speed required ......probably won't keep the planner down. Great input THANKS AGAIN

You have to run a little faster ( 3 to 5 mph) than normal to make the spoon work properly. Just watch the rod tip to see if the spoon is causing the rod tip to jiggle a good bit. Too slow, no action on the rod tip. Spoons work best when on a three-way swivel behind a mojo or with an inline trolling weight. They will work behind a planner, but tend to easily trip the planner.

I will just ditto everything about spoons --- I have had great success with the crippled L ----
In fact, after pulling in one to Ruddee Inlet several captains of much larger boats than I stopped by to see what I was using to have so many hits. They never used the spoon/ Crippled L Y.

Depending on the length of leader material, the more QUALITY in-line swivels the better.
