Come on guys i need alittle advise on this. Thanksgiving morning i took my uncle and little cousin to go fishing for rock fish and i set up for casting pilings and rocks since i dont have any big tackle yet. i was out there before sun up untill about 0900. on my way from leaveing the third island with no fish i had been hearing about people slaying them over the tube. so i went and observed what they were doing. it looked like there is a hole because i watched about 6 boats and everytime they past over a certain spot they all hooked up. my uncle had enough to try an attempt. we broke in a snag and i left pissed off i couldnt get my guys on some fish. i was wondering what conditions i need to look for to use that trick.. does anyone else try it here? i just got some big rods and bait for christmas.. was very suprised.. and want to try before bay season is out. let me know any advice its much appreciated.. but understood if you dont want to reveal secrets.
thanks guys preston

There is no magic trick when fishing for stripers. The key is finding the fish. If it was over the tubes, you probably observed people wirelining (thin line down to a heavy weight off a three way swivel with a trailer). Sure there are some proven techniques when the fish seem to have lock-jaw and wirelining is one of them. But, with stripers, if you find a good school of fish that are feeding, you can throw just about anything at them. Casting to the pilings along the CBBT is usually a sure shot but look around you for Gannets diving into the water (they are after baitfish..and where there are baitfish, you will usually find stripers). Keep plugging away, putting in your time, and reading this board for advice. It will come to you. The adventure is in learning the techniques.

The hole you refer to was probably them going over the spine which is the rocks covering the tubes if your around the the third watch getting close the island on the channel side cause there is a rock known as rouge rock or boat eater and its out away from the island a little bit. Casting the pilons is a tried and true along with the island but wirlineing is a art I don`t have the patients for cause it take constant work on the rod or you will lose a lot of tackel

The way I like to fish for rock is to hug the pilings and jig. I prefer soft plastics, but metal jigs work great as well - even better when the current is ripping. If your fish finder is lit up, keep working that depth with different sizes til you find one that works. Color can matter, but don't forget the size - that can be key as well.
