They are talking about the Elizabeth River in that article. I wouldn't eat anything out of there anyway.

I grew up on the Elizabeth River, down past the Ford PLant and never had a problem with the fish/crabs I have caught there,, Thats why you cook them first

Really give me a break the fish in the river are fine some of them summer in rudee inlet or at least thats what a few tagged fish I have caught said on the paper work

Like Jimbob said, most of the fish in the Elizabeth river are migratory. The specs in the Hot Ditch and the stripers under the Norfolk Southern bridge spend most of their lives elsewhere. They should be fine to eat. But crabs and shellfish don't go very far, and they live in the mud where the worst of the pollutants are. Creosote from the old plant is a bad one. PCB's, PAH's and TBT are others. None of them make you feel sick or make your crabs taste bad. They are chemicals that acumulate in your tissues and cause cancer 20 years down the road. And they allow commericial crabbing in these areas too. You'll never know that it was the PCB's hidden mustard in the crabs you ate that killed you. My experience with government tells me that if it's bad enough for them to issue a warning, it's probably worse than they say and years past due. Rinse the mustard out of your crabs and live to see your grandchildren grow old. Just my advice.

I'm sure you will all live to be at least 65 years old. Me, I'm shooting for 95. People still say smoking doesn't harm you either. I have bad luck so I'm not eating nothing out of that cresote pit. But then agan what do all those scientific government reports mean anyway. Agent Orange didn't cause Cancer either; right. Me I don't like Russian roulette, just not lucky.

you gotta be real hungry to want to eat that $h!t anyway, yuk!

The key point of the article was to avoid eating the crab mustard over a long term.

The same advisory goes for the tomalley (the green stuff) in lobsters. Generally they advise not to eat a lot of the stuff more than once a month.

I figure it's the same for crabs.
