Went out from 9-11 a.m. this morning and caught several flounder. The bite was on at the bend and there were plenty of boats on it. Several shorts, a keeper and a pretty good size one that got away. It was a beautiful morning and fairly good fishing.

I have never been what I would call a successful flounder fisherman. Went out Sunday and wouldn't want to change my rating so... no fish. Anybody got any helpful advice. I am questioning the squid strips and my late position in the tide.

Good that they're starting to come in, to bad people are starting to illegally keep them too. Heard some people at school went out drinking underage, without fishing licenses, no life preservers on the boat, and were keeping every flounder they caught, told them not to do it again. Of course they will do it again, just hope they get busted, i warned them about the fines, id call them in if i knew they had the fish in their boat and knew the boat name. Pisses me off that ignorant people like them ruin it for the rest of us.

Seeker- nothing wrong with squid (use tube squid though), just cut a long strip and hook so it flutters with the current and reeling. A gudgeon (minnow) with the squid strip to help hold it on can be deadly now. Regular bottom rigs or the flounder rigs you can buy or make both work well. Fish with enough weight to hold bottom at your depth/drift speed. Spot, croaker, and pinfish among others work well for flounder bait as do strips cut from the dogfish you will be catching along the way. Another favorite for me is Gulp baits. I like the 4"shrimp, any color though I prefer natural. Also the 7"jerk shads, in white. I like to find an edge with some bait on it. I also like to drift from shallow water into deep as I believe the fish are waiting in the cooler, deeper water for bait to be carried to them by the current. Marlin Maniac has written he likes to drift edges the OTHER way, if my memory serves corrrectly and he does well with the flatties when he targets them so the important thing is the edge. In deeper water, still fish edges- channel edges, breaks in bottom types, and don't forget structure! Anything that attracts bait will hold fish at times and flounder are no different. The only difference is they are hard to see on a fish finder! Put your time in and pay attention to what works for you. And don't be afraid to change how and where you are fishing. The most rewarding fishing spots are those you found yourself, which is why you seldom see people share there honey holes. And why you would get frisked for a pocket GPS if you get on my boat! Oh yeah, and blindfolded!
