We picked up some nice ones while fishing for flounder around the Yancey and the small boat channel. On an incoming tide, drift about a mile of bridge near the small boat channel on the Bay side. There is an oyster bar there that seems to hold croakers better than any other spot I've seen.
When I want fish bad, I go inside the MM on east side of the channel (I think the there is a red buoy about a mile inside the MM on ride side of the channel going up the James. use bloodworms and enough weight to stay on there bottom no matter how hard the tide is running. Best results on incoming tide about two hours after mean low. Have fun with the kids.
