Virginia Saltwater Water Citation Updates

Anglers saw some of the season's best action this week. Mixed bags of Tuna, Mahi, Wahoo, Grouper, Kings and a few Billfish were landed during our week of summertime weather.

Oregon Inlet has been reporting great catches of Blackfin tuna with some Yellowfin mixed in. The Yellowfin bite has been scattered yet to say the least, but improving conditions could change that any day. Gaffer Mahi have been hitting the docks on a regular basis. Fish are topping 20 pounds or more. Hunter Carstens, 9 years old, landed a 19 pound Mahi while fishing on 'Still Think'n'. Then with some encouragement from the crew, bit the head of a ballyhoo to help raise the tuna. Not more than 15 minutes later and 30 pound Yellowfin is flopping in the fish box. Way to go Hunter!

Hatteras is heating up with a variety of fish. From surface feeders like Wahoo, Mahi and Tuna to the bottom fish like Grouper, Snapper and Tilefish, anglers are filling their coolers. Wahoo have been topping 40 pounds and Blackfin tuna are ranging from 20-30 pounds. The first White Marlin was released on Tuesday and was caught by Chase Parks from Manteo. Paul Conly from West Virginia was the lucky angler on the rod and had the chance to fight and release a Blue Marlin. The billfish bit is poised to explode out of Hatteras, just in time for tournament season.

Several Virginia boats went searching for tuna in the warm water over the Triple Zeros only to find no Bluefin around. They were skunked however. Dr. Ken Neil put his crew on some great Mahi. Hunter Southall weighed in a 20 pound dolphin while Bob Manus got Virginia paper for his 39 pound Bull Mahi. What a great fish for this early in the season.

Until next week, get out there and…Catch 'em Up!

Maryland Report

When the weather is right, boats have been venturing out to the inshore wreck sites and artificial reefs and catching tautog. Often enough many of them are some real whoppers.

Way to go Hunter! Bit the head off of a ballyhoo? I hope they gave you some bunker oil to wash that bad taste out of your mouth. biggrin.gif

They didn't but that is OK he wil remember that for a long tme to come. He has told everyone that he bit the head off a fish. Nothing like teaching and corrupting the young all at the same time. It is hard to keep that boy off a boat now I can only imagine what it is going to be like when he gets older. He has already said when he goes again he is going to bite the head again becasue it brought us good luck.
