I am new to bay fishing and need a little help. I keep my boat at Taylor's and was wondering where would be the best place to cast a net for bait before heading out. Also, what kind of bait should I be looking for? Or is anything small and lively worth putting on a hook. What bait fish work best for flounder, and cobia. Have caught bait on sabiki's down in the Keys. Do they work here too. Thanks for any advice.

Don't know that area, but it's hard to beat 3-4" spot or menhaden. Mullet do well also and stay lively forever.

MegaBite caught an AWESOME cobia on a 5" menhaden. Some use croakers on float rigs.

They sell sabiki rigs here, but I've never tried them - it's just too easy to throw a net on a school of bait.

Where do you find the menhaden? They are open water bait fish aren't they? The spot and croaker you would catch them on a small hooked bottom rig, right?

Big bunker in open water off the beaches, 2"-4" peanut bunker can be caught all over Lynnhaven Inlet. Just look for them buzzing the surface. When there is a school of them feeding near the top, it looks like little raindrop ripples and you can see them flash as you go over them.

Baby spot like to hang out near drop offs close to grassy shorelines. I throw the net on them instead of trying to hook 'em. I have a few places that consistently produce decent numbers of flounder bait-sized spot.

I catch small croaker by the Little Creek jetties using squid.
