Left Lynnhaven aound 9am and headed to the IMG with my Dad. Fished in about 15' of water with 2 rods and a little chum. Set the
rods (1 with a whole bunker and the other with sea clam) and then helped de-winterize a few things and do some clean up on my
Dad's boat. Twenty minutes later the bunker gets hit- no joy- and then the sea clam get hit. The fish runs, I increase the drag
and the circle hook sets. Next thing I know I am hooked up to good sized Cobia. Get it to the boat and realize it is a lot
bigger than I thought. We did not bring the large net and we decided that we needed to release the fish becasue we did not bring
any ice.
Funny how things work when you are not really expecting to catch anything.
Ended up getting the fish in the boat by me grabbing it by the jaw (both hands) and my Dad by the tail. My hands are torn up from
the sandpaper like mouth.
The fish was tired so we got a few cell phone pics measured it and it and it was right at 58". It would have topped the scale at
way over 55#. Got it back in the water and revived it so that it swam away. It had a little trouble figuring which way to go
but finally dropped down and out of site. It was a good fight and hope it survives.
Ended up with another Cobia for my Dad that was around 27 inches. A fun fish that was even more fun in the boat.
A GREAT day on the water with nobody else around and a great way at starting the season with a release citation.
