VBSF members the Coast Guard ask us to pass along the following documents on ride sharing and chartering.
Message from the Coast Guard on trip sharing: The following documents provide clarification of the regulations related to charter operations, and ensure that
all operators who carry even one hop-on for hire holds in their possession a valid Coast Guard license.

They have received numerous reports of potentially illegal charter vessel activity in the Hampton Roads area. They are asking websites like VBSF to help address the issue with prevention through education, by voluntarily posting two documents, one addressing vessel operators and the other addressing prospective passengers. The purpose of the documents are to clarify the requirements for carrying passengers for hire, and to explain what constitutes a passenger for hire. The documents should provide clarification of the regulations related to charter operations, and ensure that all operators who carry even one hop-on for hire holds in their possession a valid Coast Guard license.
If anyone has further questions feel free to conatct LTJG Aidan L. Van Cleef, United States Coast Guard - Investigations Division, Sector Hampton Roads.
