Fished out of OI on Saterday went to the point about 3-4 miles shy of the point
started marking fish!! Water temp was 68-69 degrees ,put out spread of 6-8
bubble heads, jets, whitches ,squids all with small to medium ballyhoo.
The fish were everywhere, big schools of tuna but no knock downs or strikes!!!
The fish were on the bottom to 40ft below the surface ,Talk about being frustated
with seeing all those fish but no strikes.
When we got back to the dock, I asked the other fishermen if they had any luck
and only a couple people had 1-2 tuna.
What do you do in a situation like that???
heading back down thursday night to give it another shot over the holiday week-end. It seems to me I realy dont have much luck when the moon is full.
Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Use downriggers. They work well for deep fish.

Hey, we were down there this past wed, thurs, friday, and sat....wed,thurs we had great luck...went to the point and caught mahi, tuna, and even a small wahoo. We were in 80 degree water...we rested on friday, and went back out on sat. Same spot and couldn't find water over 71 degree...ended up goin south and found warmer water, but nothing consistent...i didn't know the gulf stream could shift that much in such a short time....but, in that warmer water on wed and thurs. we had good luck, so i hope you find them this week.

Hey Don,
Here's a couple of things you can try. Like busbees said run downriggers, or run planners or heavy trolling sinkers. These get the bait down, not down as far as a downrigger would. The first thing I do when top baits aren't happening is to get a planner and drop it down.
Another thing you can do is to drop your spread back further, may be 20' intervals on each postion. This gets the bait away from the boat which may spook those not so hungry fish. You may need to bump up your speed to keep the bait/lures tracking the same. We did this last Wednesday and it worked on the bluefin.
Also try a gentle zig-zag troll instead of a straight and true approach. This puts the bait out of the wash in clean water every now and then allowing the fish to see them better. Just keep changing things up, speed, lure distance, trolling track...until you spark a bite. Sometimes they are just plane not interested. It's frustrating I know to see fish on your screen and none on the baits, but you must have the bad to appreciate the good. blink.gif Don't give up.

Good Luck and let me know how you do Thursday!!

Yeh, Use same baits:rigged ballyhoos, lures, or even big spoons.

Lots of Tuna on the dock OI July 4th ...
RECOVERY
Fished out past tower G onthe 4th had tuna on the top ,had one right at the bow of the boat but wasn,t fast enough to get him its going to be a haugnting memory I can still see his yellow fins on his tail as it swam away.
Did manage to get a few dolphin and a few small AJ's Saw 4 ocean sun fish and
ran across a large pod of dolphins that were booking, and some took the time to swim with the boat got some great video.
Still trying to figure out the off shore trolling ,my hoo washed out fast and got some nasty tangles ,but all in all the ocean was flat and made it back to OI from 30mi out in about an hour.

about how long does it take to get out to the towers out of OI? I havent been out to any of them but would like to give it a shot later in the summer. I know there are several, which one is the closest and what should I expect around there? AJs, dolphin, kings...

Tower C is about 17mi and Tower G is about 21mi out it took me under an hour to get to tower G. but the seas were flat
Before you head to the tower catch some small blues in the inlet an putem in the livewell,AJ'S love'em. At the tower locate fish and drop a live blue over it only takes less than a minute to hook-up!!then power away from the tower.
I've also caught some 36inch dolpin and triger fish.
Good luck the big AJ,s will give you a great fight!!!
