We catch them fairly often- I think the problem is so many names for them. I am not sure about the difference in teh southern or northern (rebs or yanks to folks down heah). But I found them to be delicious many years ago. A lot of folks don't recognize them so just throw them back but there is some good meat on them. Of course, as a southroner, I prefer them fried!

They were all Southern Kingfish - good question since very few people know that there are two varieties. I was mainly Flounder fishing but changed to a two drop rig with fish byte on the bottom rig often with crab or shrimp. Thus I found the kingfish by accident, lost several by not being careful when bringing them over the boat. I wish I had switched over earlier.
They are great to eat. Other names for Kingfish which you mainly hear in N. Jersey but Virginia Mullet, Roundheads, Whitting.
Easy to tell the difference, the Northern Kingfish has a tassel off his dorsal fin much like a thread fin shad. There colors differ with one being silvery and the other with blended in darker stripes.
Forgot to mention, started off near the East River fishing for pupppies, trout and flounder but the biters were too numerous - so we left to run accross to Cape Charles. Heard later that Croaker were all over Kiptopeke, should have moved farther to the mouth of the bay.
The kingish have been running in good sizes off the outer banks - several weeks ago a several of us picked up 4 or 5 citations along with some nice size Pompano off ramp 38.
