The Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association hosts a tournament each year which is designed to encourage more women and children to become involved in sportfishing. This annual Youth and Ladies Tournament is a much anticipated event each year. The tournament is free to all participants. It is held over a week’s time to give a better chance for some calm fishing conditions. The targeted species are croaker and flounder. Prizes for this year’s event were gift certificates to local businesses provided by the PSWSFA. The tournament culminated with a cook-out and awards ceremony held at Dare Marina and Yacht Sales on July 26.
Hayden Head won the Youth Croaker Division with a 2 pound 7 ounce fish. Sydney Rinck took second place with a 1 pound 13 ounce croaker. Third place was won by Nathan Gross with a 1 pound 8 ounce fish.
The Ladies Croaker Division was won by Kay Uhler with a 1 pound 13 ounce fish. Rachel Nelson came in second place with a 1 pound 11 ounce croaker. The third place croaker was a 1 pound 8 ounce fish caught by Christina Head.
The Youth Flounder Division was won by Mckenna Head with a 3 pound 13 ounce flatfish. Second place was a 3 pound 9 ounce flounder caught by Madison Hunt. Spencer Elford won third place with a 3 pound 5 ounce fish.
Rachel Nelson won the Ladies Flounder Division with a 4 pound 11 ounce fish. Lisa Southall came in second with a 3 pound 9 ounce flounder. Christina Head’s 2 pound 12 ounce flounder earned her third place.
Thanks to hard-working volunteers, everyone had a good time and ate very well. Plans are already underway for next year’s event.
