last Friday (8-7-09) I decided to go on a short flounder trip by myself out to the CBBT. I set up and made my first drift toward the bridge using live spot on one rod and squid on another. 1st drift produced 20" flounder on the squid, next drift nothing. 3rd. drift produced nice 25" flounder, 4th drift was intresting. I had one rod with spot in a rod holder and one in hand with squid, pretty close to bridge I hooked up with the squid rod and it felt like a very nice fish. As I was getting a little to close to the bridge, since I have a tower and outriggers, I had to horse him a little to hard and pulled the hook I went to clear the live spot rod out of the way so I could move away from the bridge and found it also was hooked up with a nice fish. Now I'm fighting this fish and keeping the boat off the bridge at the same time with about 10 other boats very close I managed to get hold of the leader and saw the fish for the first time and my jaw dropped. I was sure I'd never get him in the small net but thought I at least got to see him. I dipped the net in the water and pulled him head first without a splash. I pulled away from the bridge and was down on the deck getting the hook out of his mouth when I heard a loud thump, I looked up and there was a guy on my boat jumping up and down cheering. He grabbed hold of my still flopping fish and tried to hold it up so another guy could take his picture and he nearly dropped it over the side, now I'm still drifting toward the bridge and I got strangers on my boat with cameras and a guy hanging on to my bow rail I told them thats enough and I headed to the dock. The fished wieghed in at about 13lbs. right after I caught it but 12lbs. 11oz. 1 1/2 hrs later. I tried to post a picture but Know how.

Wow man great story. That would have sucked if those idiots had made you lose that fish over the boat. Try to get someone to help with the picture because I would really like to see that fish. action-smiley-033.gif

Very nice fish! Now, as for the boarders - sounds like you needed Capt. Fatbeard aboard to repel boarders. Who in their right mind does that?!? I can see if you're in obvious distress, but it seems you had it under control.. I can tell you this - if that knucklehead had dropped MY fish over the side, he would be right behind it!

Now let's see the picture!

That is a halibut !!! Did you harpoon it and shoot it with a 4/10 shotgun?????
ryfisher
Are you going to have that flounder mounted or are you going to eat it?
p-vaugh7
Nice fish.. and from the looks of the picture.. i pass your boat and stare at it often.. nuice boat too.. haha
joe kay
I ate some and gave away the rest. I'm ordering a replica with the measurements I took before I cleaned it. 35" long 17" wide his mouth was nearly 5" in dia. when opened. He swallowed an 8" spot with ease.
BillyBoy
When I break the 15lb mark, I'm gonna get it mounted. Might take the rest of my life though... Who did you hire for the work?

Billy Boy, I'm just curious...how big is the flounder in your profile picture? It looks like it may be as big as the 12 pound 11 oz. one.

Joe, that is a Beautiful Fish, congrats !!!!!

Just wondering where you weighed in your fish ?? I'm having a hard time believing that fish only weighed 12lb11oz's for such a huge fish. Would you have considered him "thin" ?? Just comparing my notes to what I know, that same weekend we caught (5) citations along the CBBT.

7lb9oz @ 25.5 inches long on Wed
8lb4oz @ 26 inches long on Sat
8lb12oz @ 26.25 inches long on Sat

and the one that has me wondering........
12lb4oz @ 30 inches long and 14inches wide.

If you add from the smallest to the biggest we caught for citations, it's about 1pound per inch. Yours was 35 inches long and 17 inches wide, unless it was very thin and starving I thought your fish would have weighed close to the state recond of 17lb8oz. The fish in the Bay have been feeding heavily this summer and all the fish that we are catching are very fat and healthy.

The guy that jumped on your boat is named Charles that works @ a local tackle shop, he told me all about it and I've been searching for your fish for a while and I just heard that you had it posted on this board.

Did you or do you have any doubts about the weight of that fish ?? One heck of a nice Flounder. Again, congrats.
joe kay
I weighed it at long bay, and yes Steve wray commented on how skinny it was.
